ST TUDY SCARECROW COMPETITION
March 2005
‘They say the sun shines on the righteous, well it certainly shone on St Tudy on
Good Friday and Easter Saturday when the Scarecrow Competition was in full
swing, Easter Day not so good weather wise but the visitors kept coming. What a
display, there were 32 entries spread over the village and everyone’s
imagination certainly ran riot. Traditional style scarecrows stood side by side
with witches, painters & decorators, cyclists, Tony Blair & George Bush, Michael
Jackson, farmers, fishermen, ploughmen, and even a model of Rev. Margaret
conducting a christening, to name but a few. Ray Shaddick had the unenviable
task of choosing the winners and he was so impressed by the entries from the
village children that he insisted on adding two more prizes – thank you Ray. He
was accompanied around the village by Mrs Alice Goad who had the original idea
for the competition, and Sue Dibble who helped to organise it. Being such a
recognisable figure he was stopped many times by well wishers; then it was back
for coffee & biscuits while he made his decisions. The winners were, 1st Val
Smith with her ‘Financial Advisor’, 2nd Phil Tizzard with his model by the
village pump and 3rd Gary & Sally Keat with their cyclist doing the ‘Tour de St
Tudy’. Highly Commended were the Mann children with their Witch in a tree and
the Harris children with Worzel and friends. Maps were provided so that visitors
did not miss any of the entries and many of the scarecrows had donation boxes
for the St Tudy Church Roof Repair Fund.
