Dear Friends,

Within our Methodist Circuits we are involved in a time of change. At the end of August the Rev Stella Long left us for pastures new, as she has moved on to the Romsey Circuit in Hampshire to become their Superintendent Minister. We thank Stella for all of her work in the 5 years that she has spent amongst us. At the beginning of September we welcomed two Ministers to work with us and amongst us - the Rev Ray Avent and the Rev Doreen Sparey-Delacassa.

Ray Avent will be working with us in a part time capacity for one year looking after our St. Breward, St Tudy and Camelford Churches. Doreen is coming amongst us initially for 5 years to develop a new approach to Ministry. Her role is a pioneering one through which we hope we shall see the development of new initiatives. Doreen will be working across our Camelford and Tintagel and Week St. Mary Circuits.

Our other major change is that we are working towards amalgamating the Camelford and Tintagel and Week St. Mary Circuits in September 2010. We thank Ray for agreeing to come amongst us and look forward to all that he will offer to us. Ray will be writing the articles for your magazine over the coming months. Every blessing.         Bryan Ede Superintendent Minister

ST TUDY PARISH CHURCH AND ITS FINANCIAL PROBLEMS

The Parish Church in this village has been witness for well over five hundred years to innumerable services, weddings, baptisms and funerals and the importance that it had in the lives of so many is evidenced by the memorials inside and outside in the churchyard. It has been at the heart of village life until more recent years when patterns of existence have changed and for many the “Church” and its teachings have lost relevance to daily life.

This has inevitably had a dramatic impact upon the financial situation and we in St Tudy are faced with the prospect of not being able to live within the income that we can raise from all sources. The church in this village is entirely dependent upon the monies raised by its churchgoers. (We have an Electoral Roll of only 40) and that is no longer enough to sustain an increasing liability to the Diocese. The Parochial Church Council in 2009 has been asked to pay to the Diocese over £11000 and next year and in subsequent years that requirement will increase by about 3% annually. This is on top of the £15000 it costs yearly to maintain the structure and the services. At the beginning of 2010 we are likely to be faced with an accumulated debt to the Diocese of £18,000.

Many of our problems would be resolved if our congregations were twice or three times what they are. It will be apparent that the congregation in the Parish Church is an aged one with all the implications that has for the future. This note therefore is a plea from the Parochial Church Council for more support both in a physical way and financially. We really do need more young or younger churchgoers to help drive the “Church” in the village forward as older ones cease to be able to provide the support that they have given, in many cases, for decades.

GEOFFREY GIBBONS with the authority of Rev Margaret Millson

                                                                   and the Parochial Church Council

ST TUDY ALLOTMENTS

We held our open day at the end of August and we were very lucky with the weather.  It was a celebration of everything we have achieved.  Four months ago it was a field full of sheep now there are nineteen allotments all full of produce.  Thank you to everybody who supported this event.

We raised £157.90, which will help to pay for our new water system.  It's ironic really that ever since we made plans to install a proper system it has rained and we haven't needed it!  There is still room for a few more allotments and if anybody is interested in having one please contact Sarah Northcott telephone 851459.

THE FRIENDS OF ST MABYN CHURCH

Quiz enthusiasts are in for a treat on Wednesday 7th October at 7.30pm in St Mabyn Village Hall when the ‘Friends’ hold their first Wine and Wisdom evening.   A Quiz Master has been appointed and entry is only £4 per person (£16 for a team of four), which includes one free glass of wine with cheese, biscuits and nibbles. This is intended to be a fun evening when even the winners of the wooden spoon are guaranteed a round of applause! Please telephone 01208 841607 to book a table. If you can’t make up a team please ring anyway as we may be able to do some matchmaking on your behalf, hopefully making this a night to remember!

George Dyke has decided that it is time to step down from the FOSMC Committee and our Chairman, Liz Williams, expressed warm appreciation for all he has done during the past five years. George is a founder member of Friends and will be greatly missed on the Committee, especially his efforts to keep us all on an even keel!  However, there is no doubt that George will remain vigilant and very much involved in masterminding our attempts at merchandising!

Congratulations to Angela Bunney, who well and truly exceeded our expectations when she raised £132 with her quiz, which was specially compiled for the “Friends”.

We are delighted that Richard Jenkin of St Mabyn has agreed to be the speaker at a forthcoming ‘Friends’ meal and talk in St Mabyn Village Hall. Richard has recently returned from a spell teaching African children in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and has some interesting experiences to relate, which will be accompanied by photographs. Further details next month.                                                                               AUDREY COOKE

ST TUDY W I

We were blessed with a lovely sunny afternoon for our boat trip along the Tamar and a visit to the Barbican in August. Thanks to Lilian for organising this (trip and weather?) and also for our visit to see “Spirit of the Dance” at the Hall for Cornwall. Our next outing is to see Aled Jones and co at the Theatre Royal, performing “White Christmas”. We are always delighted when past members and friends join us on these occasions – so always watch out for our notices!

At our October meeting on Friday 16th, Jon Cleave will be speaking about his “Gully” books and hopefully his appearance on Eggheads with the Fishermen’s Friends. Please come and join us – Christmas ideas for the young ones!

WEDNESDAY COFFEE MORNINGS

I would like to thank all those who have supported the Coffee Mornings since early May and through to the end of September to raise funds for the Parish Church. The proceeds will total a sum of about £400. However, without the great help of those who have been kind enough to provide the refreshments and to dispense coffee on many of the Wednesdays, it would not have been possible to maintain them for five months. Given that help (and more if possible) it is hoped to introduce them again next year.                    HAZEL GIBBONS

St Mabyn Church Restoration Appeal  - Final report

Introduction. The tall tower of St Mabyn Church has been a much loved local landmark since it was built over 600 years ago, a testament to the prosperity of this rich agricultural area where the tithes made it a sought after living for the clergy. Built to hold a congregation of over 200 in comfort, adorned over the years with beautiful examples of stained glass whilst retaining its purity of line internally, it has withstood the many tests of time and its exposed situation admirably, until the past 25 years. The quinquennial inspection of the mid-Eighties revealed the six slopes of the vast roof to be in urgent need of repair and an Appeal Committee was set up to raise the half (of the estimated £20,000) required of the community, as a condition of the grant from English Heritage. Hard work and benevolence resulted in the first three slopes being totally renewed, to much rejoicing, but the PCC agreed that the remaining three slopes would have to wait whilst the community recovered from its efforts.

The most recent inspection revealed that the roof could no longer be allowed to wait, and it also showed that the roof of the tower needed attention, the great East Window (the Hext memorial) needed to be repaired and there were other minor areas inside the building (damage caused mainly due to ingress of water from the roof). In addition the poor performance of the antiquated asbestos-filled night storage heaters were a source of complaint from Parishioners.

The PCC is kept very busy raising the monies required to run the Church, paying bills for water, electricity and insurance (the annual fete is a crucial component of this) and also their share of the Common Fund, which provides our clergy, and all this from a much reduced congregation of regular attenders, augmented at the favourite Festivals, eg. Harvest, Christmas, Easter and Remembrance Sunday. Five years ago the Friends of St Mabyn Church was set up, to provide a focus for those who appreciate the building whilst not, perhaps, being regular attenders or donors, and to raise money for the upkeep of the fabric of the building. There was also a small sum in the Special Repairs Account, built up over the past twenty years from some fund-raising activities and several small legacies. It was therefore decided to establish a separate dedicated Appeal Committee to raise the

large sum required, not least because English Heritage had, in the intervening years, changed its policy on grant-giving and new regulations had to be followed and time lines adhered to very strictly.

The Committee. Chairman, Abigail Kirby-Harris, a member of the congregation and Secretary to the previous Appeal, with much subsequent experience of fund-raising was asked to form this committee and went to an EH training day where the enormity of the task became clear. A well-balanced team, collectively offering the skills needed was put together with care. Secretary, Jennifer Tarring, a former PCC Secretary with high-level administrative skills. Treasurer, Joanne Hyde, the PCC Treasurer and thus experienced in the collecting of Gift Aid and well versed in the rest of the Church’s accounts. Churchwardens, Colin Hyde (Chairman of the Fete Committee) and John Lobb, who does all the daily running repairs. Publicity. Helen Barrett, Chairman of the Village Hall Committee and a Parish Councillor. Grant Applications, Alan Millson, husband to our vicar offered stalwart support to the Treasurer. Congregation representative, Richard Jenkin offered an “informed outsider” view and a regular link to the wider village. He has also acted as the Appeal Archivist and produced the various displays of work in progress. Vicar, Margaret Millson, of course! Architect, Richard Church attended on request to update us once work had started.

Strategic Aims. The building costs would have a maximum estimate but an unknown actual, so the worst case scenario had to be followed. It was vital to convince EH that we would be able to meet their deadlines and raise the sum required (estimated at £75,000) within the year they gave us. Three separate strands of fund-raising were adopted: grant Applications, private benevolence and fund-raising events.

Methods. The Chairman met with two other Appeal Chairmen, to whom she is very grateful, Mrs Innette Austin-Smith from Advent and Simon Coy from Withiel and received much valuable advice and subsequent assistance.  Good press coverage was vital, to keep the Appeal in the public eye and events were planned so as to maximise publicity opportunities. The Bishop of Truro, and parishioner (now Sir) David Brewer agreed to be patrons of the Appeal, and thus lend it a greater formality, and the Bishop authorised an official endorsement, using his coat of arms, which was enclosed with all the letters sent. It was decided to spend money with a purpose – to commission a Thermometer to erect outside the Church to keep the village informed of progress, and to figure whenever possible in photographs, to use specially printed stationary with the logo designed for the previous Appeal and listing the Patrons and at the conclusion to commission a commemorative plaque.  (To be continued next month!)

CHRISTMAS GUESTS

Are you thinking about who might come for Christmas this year? Perhaps you would like to make if a bit different. Some of the adults from overseas who are currently studying at UK universities would love to spend a couple of days in a real home, rather than on a deserted campus. It is interesting to share Christmas with people for whom it is all quite new (many international students are from China, for example). HOST has been linking students with hospitable volunteers for 22 years, at Christmas and also one-off weekends throughout the year. HOST is a registered charity backed by the Foreign Office and many universities. It is not necessary for hosts to live near a university, as students are prepared to travel far for this unique experience! See www.hostuk.org or call Margaret Stevens, who has been HOST’s voluntary regional organiser in Cornwall since 1990 on 01326 341212. Thank you!

Allen Valley Singers

September has been a busy month, with a wedding, our second recruitment evening, our Annual concert and the first songs being laid down for our new CD.  These events all took place after the submission of this report, so full details will be included in the next publication.

Credit needs to be given to those choir members, particularly the new singers, who spent time during the August ‘break’ in extra practices to fine–tune the new material that had been requested for the September wedding and concert. Thanks must go to our Musical Director who allowed us to use her home and her time. We all enjoyed these sessions however and are delighted that the new members were able to be included in the September activities. If you would like to join us, you are always welcome to contact our Musical Director, Janette Man. Telephone 01208 841784. Other queries to our Chairman, Kym Hall, Telephone 01208 851723. HELP FOR HEROES

Major General P G Williams CMG OBE will give an illustrated lecture in St Tudy Church on Monday 9th November at 7.30pm to raise much needed funds for the charity, “Help for Heroes”. The primary purpose of this charity is to help to alleviate the suffering and traumas caused by the death of or injury to service personnel in military campaigns, especially those in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The talk will be entitled “Berlin and the Cold War: Reflections on a Lost World”. Few persons are better qualified to discuss this subject than Peter Williams. During more than three decades in the Army he served for six years in Berlin and East Germany, commanded the Coldstream Guards battalion in Northern Ireland and in Bosnia, and finally completed his service in Moscow (2002-2005) where he led NATO’s Military Liaison Mission to the Russian Federation.

There will be no charge to attend his talk but given the importance of the need to support charities caring for our Forces, it is hoped that there will be massive support for it and generous donations; all of which will be given to “Help for Heroes”.

ST MABYN GARDEN CLUB

For our September trip members of the Garden Club visited Pengelly Nurseries near St Austell.  On one of the sunniest days of the year we were made very welcome and given a very interesting demonstration to make some lovely winter pots and baskets. We were shown how it is possible to have colour through the darkest days of winter. After a complimentary cup of tea and a variety of delicious homemade cakes, members strolled around the plant nursery admiring the many plants on sale.  Needless to say some of these plants found their way to members cars and even now could be in their gardens! Members were very pleased to see our Chairman John Lobb join us on this trip.  John has lately undergone a serious operation and has been in our thoughts, so it was lovely to see him out and about.  We all wish him a speedy and full recovery.

Next meeting is 14 October 7.30 pm in St Mabyn Village Hall.  The speaker is Mr Ellis from Ellis Nurseries near Launceston is talking about the History of Gardening.  Should be very interesting. Any enquiries please telephone Angela Bunney (Secretary) 01208 841511.

FROM REVEREND MARGARET

Life seems to be getting back to normal after a miserable wet summer. Thankfully the last few days of glorious weather has meant that at the Harvest Festivals we will be able to sing “All is safely gathered in”. Please try to attend at least one, as particularly in the countryside, Harvest is such an important occasion.

On 27th September we will celebrate the Patronal Festival and Harvest Festival at Michaelstow at 11.00am. Please note the time. It will be a joint Benefice service celebrating St Michael and All Angels and Harvest. It will be followed by a lunch to which everyone is invited and where the produce will be auctioned and the proceeds will be given to the Hospice. Please support this event and make it a memorable occasion.

On 3rd October Peter Coster will receive his license at the Annual Licensing of Readers at Truro Cathedral. All welcome.

On 4th October, we will celebrate Harvest Festival at St Mabyn followed by Harvest Lunch at Stone Farm, St Mabyn (the Griggs’ home). All welcome. Produce will be auctioned after lunch. Proceeds to the Hospice.

We are delighted that on 11th October our friends from the Methodist Church will join us at St Tudy. It will be a Harvest celebration service and not a Eucharist as it is the second Sunday in the month. After the service, a hot lunch will be served in the Village Hall. Everyone welcome. The produce will be auctioned. Proceeds for the Hospice.

I do hope that the church congregations will increase and get back to normal now that autumn is fast approaching. It is so very easy to get out of the habit of going to church on a Sunday morning and I am aware that my “time off” has led to some confusion, but everything is now back to normal. Attending services is giving just over an hour to God in return for the 168 hours each week he gives to us. Aristotle who lived from 384-322BC said, “Friendship is essentially a partnership”. So is our friendship with God. So how better to celebrate it than putting aside some special time to spend with him and his and our other “friends”.

At this time, there seems to be many sick people in our villages. Please remember them in your prayers and if there are any sick people of whom I might be unaware, please let me know. I would rather be told ten times over than not at all.

The letters in this Magazine regarding finance could be written about all three of the churches in the Benefice. Please consider them carefully and prayerfully and any further ideas regarding fundraising will be gratefully received. May God Bless You All.
