We would like to thank our family for all the help they gave us on the day of Nancy’s 80th birthday celebrations, cooking etc. We also thank our friends who came from the village, and far and wide. Also the cards, bouquets of flowers, plants and goodies. It was all of you that made it such a memorable day that Nancy enjoyed so much. Thank you all very much.

On Saturday 13th March, the young farmers will be holding a wine and wisdom evening in St Tudy Village Hall at 7.30pm. Teams of 4 @ £5 per person to include glass of wine, cheese and biscuits. All proceeds to Mount Edgcumbe Hospice and Special Care Baby Unit, Treliske. To book a team, please call Amanda 07775 707021 or Peter 07859 803779 or for any other business. All welcome. THE FRIENDS OF ST MABYN CHURCHUnfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Lady Mary Holborow was unable to speak at our 27th January meal and talk. However, we were delighted that she very kindly arranged for her deputy, Christine Edwards, to talk about the History of the Lieutenancy on her behalf. Needless to say, Christine's account of events from Tudor times to the present day was absolutely fascinating and very enthusiastically received. Our guests were also treated to an excellent meal of Tuscan chicken with an alternative delicious beef dish, as well as Molly's very tasty vegetarian option. Our meal and talk by Giles Clotworthy has had to be rearranged and will now take place on Friday 26th March in St Mabyn Village Hall. This promises to be a very enlightening talk, as Giles will speak about the many years he spent working for the National Trust. As always, there will be a vegetarian option and the event will now start at 12.30pm for 1.00pm. Admission is £12 (£10 for Members) payable at the door. For catering purposes it would be very much appreciated if you could please reserve a place in advance by contacting Audrey Cooke on 01208 841607 (audreycooke@live.com.) If you would like to become a Member of Friends’ and benefit from concessions, you are welcome to join either on the day or by contacting Carol Grigg on 01208 841276. Membership remains at only £10 per annum. Our next committee meeting will take place at Menkee at 7.30pm on Tuesday 16th March. AC * * * * * * * * *THANKS
The family of Charles Ward would like to thank all his friends and neighbours for their kind thoughts and condolences. Also a BIG thank you for giving him such a fitting send off. £234 was received in donations in lieu of flowers and this has been sent to Cowbridge Nursing Home for their Comfort Fund. Olive and Charles will be interred together in St Tudy Church sometime to be arranged in the Spring. Once again thank you to all, his friends and neighbours for all the kindness and support you gave Olive and Charles, whilst they lived in your community; the family really couldn't have managed without it. Shelter Box - Haiti Earthquake appeal
Thank you St Tudy! What a wonderful, generous village. On Friday 22nd January, John and I went down to Helston to hand over £1500 to Shelter Box. This money was raised in only two days, from a Coffee Morning on the 20th and a Quiz night at the Cornish Arms that same evening. People came up to us in the street, shop and pub with donations and many an envelope was pushed through our door. Thanks must also go to Radio Cornwall who advertised the coffee morning several times and we had two people who came over from Port Isaac, specifically to give a donation after hearing the radio announcement.
When we arrived at Shelter Box HQ we were greeted by a member of their Response Team, who gave us a tour of the facility, (after relieving us of our cash-filled plastic box!) What a wonderful organisation, so efficient. There have been some changes since we went down there 5 years ago; the tents have been vastly improved, to cope with extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, and a new type of stove has been designed (by Tom Henderson's son) which is far more efficient. We tend to forget that it is not only homes that have been destroyed by these terrible disasters, but also schools, so a box is now made up specifically to help with this problem, containing, pens, pencils, paper, chalk, blackboard paint to name a few items, everything needed to start up a temporary school. When we receive the receipt for our money it will give us the numbers of the boxes that we have purchased, we will advertise these on the village website and other places so that if you wish you can track them and see where they have been sent.
We also discovered on our visit that not only are the boxes individually numbered, but inside is a note of the town or village that has donated the box. We were told a lovely story by our guide that happened in Africa - she was helping to set up tents etc on the outskirts of a village where a woman had taken in a large number of orphaned children. This lady started to pray and their interpreter told them that she was praying that the children she was looking after would grow up to have as much love and compassion as the children from the Primary School in Cornwall that had donated the box. Hopefully by the time you read this some of you will have had the opportunity to go down to Helston for their Open Day on the 13th February, if you didn't, then please look out for their next one, it really is well worth going down, it is an eye-opener. Sue & John Dibble
Apologies to Sue and John – we omitted to print details last month.
A Date For Your Diary
Johnny Cowling, Cornwall's favourite entertainer and Elvis look-alike, will be performing Elvis Presley's Gospel Music in St. Tudy Church, in aid of Church Funds, on Tuesday evening, 11th May. Some of you may have seen him when he performed in St Mabyn Church in June 2008. He was absolutely brilliant and the Church was packed. More information re cost of tickets, timing etc. will be in April's Magazine. Tickets will be available from Vanessa Wilkins after Easter. * * * * * * * * *
St Mabyn Pre-School
The Pre-School team have held two most
enjoyable, and successful fundraisers recently. The fun Quiz Night at
the end of January was just that - lots of fun and it also made over
£400, fund-raising made easy! Then the Valentine's Day Brunch provided
yet another occasion when the Village Hall was full of laughter and fun,
beautifully decorated and very appetising smells wafting through the
air! The made-to-order waffles were especially popular and kept the
chefs in the kitchen very busy and the waitresses (of all ages!) dressed
in fetching red costumes kept a great many customers well supplied. What
a super sociable occasion, final figures not available at going to press
but it all bodes well for the continuing of this very successful
pre-school. Abigail Kirby-Harris * * * * * * * * *
St Mabyn and Helland ConservativesThe Branch held a most enjoyable Quiz Evening in the Village Hall with Chairman John McLachlan acting as quizmaster. St Mabyn resident Sian Flynn, the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate led a team and members from other Branches also attended. There was a good deal of hilarity with some of the quiz sections, as those present were drawn from a wide area and age range. A licensed bar, and delicious refreshments all helped the thought processes too! Members activities will now be concentrating on the run up to the General Election and anyone interested in helping or becoming involved is invited to contact John on 01208 841831. Abigail Kirby-Harris
THANKS
We would like to thank
everyone for the kind wishes and messages during the last few weeks for
the sad loss of our son and brother Nick. Your kindness has helped a
lot. We know he will be missed by friends and family alike.
My family and I would like to thank all in the area that supported us during Caroline's illness and since she has passed away. Your support has been of great comfort to us all and your generosity has been overwhelming with the collection, for Cancer Research, raising over £1,700. ANDREW PEARCE
Thank you very much to everybody who donated money to Cornwall Hospice Care (at my 90th birthday party). £245 was raised. JOAN BROOKS * * * * * * * * *DAFFODIL COFFEE MORNINGThis year's Daffodil Coffee Morning in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care will be held in the Clink, St Tudy on Saturday, 6th March from 10am - 11.30am. Last year Marie Curie nurses in Cornwall provided more than 15,000 hours of care for more than 245 terminally ill people. Sadly, they expect this number to rise so please support this event if you possibly can. JENNY MUIR * * * * * * * * * GOOD FRIDAY: SERVICE OF MUSIC AND READINGS
On Good Friday 2nd April, there will be a Service of Music and Readings appropriate to the day in St Tudy Church at 7.30pm.
The readings will tell the story of the events leading up to the Crucifixion on the first Friday before the Resurrection on Easter Day and will be interspersed with choral music for choir and congregation and instrumental music for the organ.

BINDING STONE UPDATEIn January £100 was donated from Binding Stone funds to purchase some new crockery for the Clink. The old crockery has been sorted out, some kept, but it was felt that as so many organisations use the Clink, it would be nice to have some new, matching crockery. This brings the total of donations to the village to £4676.80. The books are still on sale, now reduced to £2.50, from the Post Office, Judith Jasper or Sue Dibble. The funds have been boosted not only by sales but also by generous donations from a resident of the village. There is still just under £150 in the account. THE BINDING STONE COMMITTEE

RUSH JOBS CALENDAR
This is a special calendar, which has been developed for handling rush jobs. All rush jobs are wanted yesterday, consequently all dates run backwards – with this calendar, management or customers can order their work on the 7th and have it delivered on the 3rd. Everyone wants his job done by Friday, so there are three Fridays in every week. There are five new days at the end of the month for “end of the month” jobs. No one likes Mondays, so these have been eliminated. There are no Saturdays or Sundays, so overtime rates can be kept to a minimum. There is a special day each week, Mirday, for the performance of miracles.
THIRTY HAPPY YEARS
After 46 years, 42 of them in the Navy and 4 years serving all three Armed Forces, in war and peace from Scapa Flow to Tokyo Bay, I opted to leave Government Service. On my return to the UK after the Japanese surrender, I had embarked on (so far) 63 years of happy marriage. Pam spent 4 years as a WREN in the war, where she served from Portsmouth to Devonport, ducking the German bombs during the Blitz in Plymouth. Her duties then took her on a perilous voyage to Durban (South Africa). This venture was more happily repeated after the war, when we were sent to Simonstown where I was appointed to a Cruiser and the C in C’s staff.
Our last ten years of peacetime service were particularly wearing. Three years in the United States, where diplomatic wives have a heavy load, made even heavier in those days when, though Britain wisely took no part in the Viet-Nam war, our wives did their best to comfort the whey-faced young men arriving nightly in giant Starlifters on their way to hospital, or sadly, the Arlington National Cemetery.
My last five years as a civilian Director General of Intelligence meant that I lived in a flat in London during the week, while Pam became a District Councillor and Market Gardener in an old house in Wiltshire. As were both under threat from terrorists, the house was equipped with panic buttons to summon police or the adjacent RAF Lyneham.
At last a gentle note arrived, acquainting me that my time on the Active List was ending. (Admirals never actually “retire”.) So we used part of my gratuity to rent a house in Daymer Bay, into which we poured children and grandchildren, and, incidentally, met the Port Isaac Surgery, when Dr Barker arrived at 10pm for a case of croup. Escaping from the inferno, and armed with details of local houses, Pam and I drove through St Tudy. She fell in love with the village and the Old Rectory. It was the balm, she felt, for which we had been looking.
Events went well, and on a happy evening in September 1979, we arrived as the B & B guests of Tresa and Jim Kempthorne. After a magnificent breakfast of a quality and quantity I never let her forget, Tresa and Jim wished us good luck, and we joined two enormous pantechnicons discharging a load of furniture and assorted junk, which it was clear The Old Rectory could never conveniently accommodate. However, just as the truth was dawning on us, Tom Darlington turned up with the words “I expect you are C of E, and I am the Methodist Minister, but shall we say a little prayer together that you will be happy here”. We joined him, and our prayer was quickly answered, for he suggested we should meet Gary Keat, whose skills might ease the congestion. Six months later, thanks to those skills and a young Graham, and those of Terry Burden and apprentice Andrew, and Ian Hodges and others, we re-occupied a replumbed, re-wired, (and almost re-built) Garlands. The name, Gary told us, as he fixed the beautifully carved slate by the front door, was the one by which the house was known, as the residence of Mr Garland, the great schoolmaster to whom his generation owed much.
So, after 30 happy years, and a circle of exceptionally kind friends, on or about mid March, we hope to settle into Fairfield Country Care Home, while our three daughters clear the house (or we hope they do) by the end of the month. Pam then rests a bit before a serious operation designed to untrap the nerve in her neck, at the moment causing a complete loss of feeling in her fingers. Though we shall be less than thirty miles away, the Rector has permitted us eventually to be planted with so many past and recent friends beside the yews in St Tudy Cemetery. So we feel it is not farewell, and that our hope that we shall meet again may be fulfilled. Meanwhile, we look forward to seeing any friends who might be driving in our direction. Our address will be: Fairfield Country Rest Home, Launcells, nr Bude. Tel. 01288 381241. Email: leb.garlands@tiscali.co.uk SIR LOUIS LE BAILLY
GARAGE SALE AT GARLANDS HOUSE
As we are moving to two small rooms, there will be a considerable amount if items remaining after daughters and the auctioneers have removed nominated goods. Our daughters are therefore holding a “Garage Sale” on Saturday 20th March from 11am, hoping to dispose of the rest.
Any funds raised will be in aid of the Church and the Chapel. Bargains include a Windows 98 computer, odds and ends of furniture, kitchen equipment, books, garden goods etc. Come and look, you may find something you never knew you wanted!
ST TUDY PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council met in St Tudy Village Hall on Wednesday 27th January. There was one
apology and no member of the public present. There were no reports from the Cornwall Council
nor from the Police. There were no planning applications. The Wadebridge and Padstow Community
network, under the auspices of Cornwall Council, are compiling a scrapbook "Spotlight on your Parish".
It is important to note the things that are good about the area we live in and the people and the
places that make this part of Cornwall unique and special. If you have anything, items, photos, stories
etc. that could go in the scrapbook publication to advertise St Tudy, please contact Cllr Margaret Shelley
on 851118.
Is there anyone in St Tudy who could teach the playing of hand bells and
possibly help to organise a hand bell playing group? The Council has a fine
set of hand bells, which are currently lying idle. Anyone interested please
contact me on 851118.
The Council are investigating the acquisition of a number of boxes to hold
salt or grit for use on treacherous icy slopes. Your Council meets in St Tudy Village Hall at
7-00pm on the last Wednesday of every month except August and December. All villagers are
welcome to attend and you may raise any relevant issues at the start of the meeting.

* * * * * * * * *Dear Friends
I had an Uncle who received a government grant circa 1947 to set up a brand new business in North Wales. The reason was he manufactured a good, reliable range of electrical products that he had designed himself and local unemployment there then was at a frightening level even by post-war standards. His ability to begin and maintain the highest possible standards remains evident in that the Company still thrives now run by his grandson Max.
I expect in your family circle you have had certain people who made their mark as it were on you, your family, your neighbourhood or even your area of the country. They do leave behind an important legacy so much so that I am relating my Uncle and his prowess to you even now in this letter. He had a pet phrase apparently which was ‘If you are going to do something, make the proper arrangements!’ All in all a maxim worth taking forward into our lives I think, however we may apply it.
Do you agree that careful, thoughtful planning usually brings the best results overall? It is some years now since I decided that the planning necessary for a useful, productive and secure life and lifestyle needed much more than I could personally put into it. At that point I handed over the reins to a creative power and personal guide infinitely superior to myself and I have never looked back since despite the rigours that life can confront me with. In my vocabulary he is my Father, his son is my Lord and his Spirit my guide. No, this is not hyper-spirituality speaking this is just me and my attempt to make ‘the proper arrangements’ for now and for always. We shall be taking these thoughts further as a part of learning curve together at St. Tudy Methodist in the coming days hope to see you there sometime. Ring me if I can be of help to you. Rev. FROM REVEREND MARGARET
We are now in the middle of Lent and Easter is fast approaching. It has been suggested that we meet during the first four Mondays in March at 10am at the Rectory and for our Lenten discipline this year, discuss the readings for the following Sunday. The meeting will last no longer than one hour. Lent, is of course, the time when we prepare for the death of Jesus and we often give things up and put the money we may save to charitable use. For Christians, it is a very special time and a time of preparation for the joy of Easter.
I have quite a few baptisms booked in the near future. This is lovely. There is, of course, no charge for baptisms, although we do put a plate out for a voluntary collection. Having our children baptised is something very special that we can do for them. Hopefully we shall be having a Sunday School starting up again in a few weeks in St Tudy, so watch this space.
Congratulations to the people of St Tudy who raised enough money for three Shelter boxes to help the people of Haiti and to St Mabyn who raised enough for one Shelter box. This is very much a part of Christian outreach.
Sadly Sir Louis and Lady Pamela will be leaving St Tudy on 17th March, to live nearer to their daughter as neither of them are in the best of health. St Tudy will not be the same without them. It is impossible to list what their contributions have been, not only to the life of St Tudy, but also to our country and indeed the world. May their new life bring them contentment and happiness and may God bless them.
At the moment, there are a lot of poorly people throughout the Benefice. Please remember them in your prayers and let me know of anyone I might have missed. Every blessing. REVEREND MARGARET

ST TUDY VILLAGE HALL VACANCIES
This notice applies to all St Tudy residents. On Monday 19th April at the Annual General Meeting
of the St Tudy Village Hall, the Hall Trustees retire and a new Management Committee will be
elected by the St Tudy villagers present. The current Chairman and Vice Chairman will not seek
re-election and therefore we will, at that time, need volunteers to fill these positions to play their
important parts in the management of the Hall.
It is for the benefit of the village that such volunteers should be able and keen and be prepared
to give their time to exercise their functions as well as have the past excellent Chair and Vice Chair persons.
Volunteers for these unpaid positions in the management team must attend the
AGM, be resident in St Tudy, 18 years of age or over and able to keep the
Village Hall running as well as it has been up to the present by the exercise
of fairness, impartiality and democratic control. Both Chairman and Vice
Chairman are supported by the Hall Trustees and by the representatives of the
numerous village member organisations.

St Tudy Garden Produce Association
On Monday 14th December we held our AGM – after enjoying a variety of Christmassy snacks and drinks. The main points were that all three shows in 2009 were much better supported than for many a year, particularly the Spring Show with over 400 entries. Show Secretary Peggy Metters said people who thought they only had a couple of things to enter should continue to do so as without them there would be no show! Treasurer Ken Metcalfe said the shows and meetings had all been subsidised slightly from funds but the two outings had paid for themselves. Membership was down again this year but our plant sale in May raised £240. We were able to purchase more vases for the shows which cost in excess of £200 as well as new trophies costing £80 but this still left us a small profit and the subscription was to remain at £4 – just as well as once again he had already started collecting money before the meeting began! A huge vote of thanks was given to Derek Handover for continuing to audit our accounts.
The existing committee was re-elected en bloc. Mary Edward-Collins wished to stand down from the Schedule Committee and Angela Hocking agreed to join. Sue Dibble said she would be on the inter-village quiz team for one more year, as next year when we play host she’d be setting the questions!
John Edward Collins generously offered to provide a cup for St Tudy Allotments “Top Table” of 6 vegetables at the Summer Show. This was greatly approved and members hoped that the school would enter as the allotment holders had given them an allotment. It might also encourage children to enter the shows themselves. After the meeting closed we had a couple of Sue’s quizzes followed by coffee, hot mince pies and cream. It was a really happy evening.
Sadly, the January meeting on How to Grow Vegetables had to be postponed until a later date, as the speaker could not get here due to the snow. However, the February meeting on Monday 8th was very entertaining when Tim Ellis came to tell us about his History of Gardening. A very droll character, he amazed us all with his slides of the work he's achieved seemingly single-handed on his nursery at Polyphant. The large audience really enjoyed listening to him, he brought some plants and seeds for us to purchase and we look forward to visiting him later in the summer.
March is a busy time. We are at St Teath for the inter-village quiz on Tuesday 2nd at 7.30pm - please do go along and support Peggy, Sue and Angela. The final evening meeting of this session is on Monday 8th with Nick Bacon coming from Trelawney Garden Centre. And the Spring Show is on Saturday 27th, there are classes for all so please enter. Ring Peggy on 851367 if you want to receive a schedule and hopefully we can equal last year's show! Jane King

We were not to be disappointed. Lorraine Turnbull gave us a very interesting talk on growing vegetable such as globe artichokes, squashes and the many varieties of the chilli. I was particularly interested when she spoke of growing corn on the cob. As this vegetable is a firm favourite of mine, I am going to try to grow a few in my little vegetable plot. Next month Wednesday 9th March 7.30pm in the Village Hall, St Mabyn. We have Margaret Thompson talking on The History of Wadebridge. You are very welcome to come along. ST TUDY PRE-SCHOOL
We start with some very disappointing news regarding the capital bid for a purpose built Pre-School in St Tudy.
· January 2010 - Our latest update is that due to the latest political u-turn regarding the schools at St Mabyn & St Tudy there has to be a consultation regarding our application, fingers crossed that the outlook is good. We shall post developments as soon as we know. · 27th January 2010 - Letter of reply regarding our bid. A disappointing and in our view inconclusive response. A decision has been deferred due to the following conditions: "We will be giving further consideration to childcare sufficiency in the area." · A meeting has been arranged for 25 February with the school to discuss our options and will post further information via the magazine or on the Pre-School web site.
The Bingo Night held in the Village Hall on 6 February was a great success with everyone having great fun and the Pre-School raising £208.00. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the evening. "Eyes Down" for the next Call.
There will be a coffee morning in The Clink on Saturday 13th March. "Mothering Sunday" is on Sunday 14th.
Details of future events will be posted on the web sites www.st-tudy-preschool.org.uk, www.sttudy.org.uk and at various locations in the village.
St Tudy Pre-school caters for children of 2-5yrs and offers four morning sessions a week, 9.00 to 1pm, including an optional lunch club 12.00 to 1.00 p.m. If you have a child who would like to attend Pre-school, please contact Liz Hustwayte, Chair, on 01208 850278. Alternatively, just pop into one of the Pre-school sessions held in the Village Hall (Monday, Wednesday Thursday and Friday mornings) where the staff will be happy to help.
Our Baby and Toddler Group held in the Village Hall on Tuesday mornings 9.15- 11.15 a.m. offers parents with very young children the opportunity to get together.
