THANKS

Jim Kempthorne would like to thank everyone who called in for his birthday, also all who sent cards.  Thanks to all for making it a wonderful day.

As most of you are aware we had our light display on over the Christmas period. We invited you all to come and enjoy the display and donate money in aid of the precious lives appeal.  Over the 3 weeks you managed to raise a grand total of £130. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their generous donations. A cheque has now been sent to the appeal. Our display will be back in December so start counting down the days.           Craig Keat & Family

The Skyner family would like to express great thanks to everyone for all the wonderful poems, cards, photographs, flowers, offers of help and hugs; also for the truly wonderful words said about Ron/Dad. Although a very sad day for us all, we felt immensely proud and enriched knowing he was loved and respected by you all. Thank you all sincerely.                                                                                            The Skyner family

St Mabyn Conservatives

North Cornwall Conservatives Association is re-launching its Branch in St Mabyn, under the auspices of St Breward Branch, at a coffee morning at Tredethy Hotel at 10.30am on Saturday 28 March. There used to be a very active Branch in the village, now the home of our Parliamentary candidate, and recent events have shown that there is strong support for this initiative. A Chairman has been identified, with a supporting team, and the new Branch will include the Parish of Helland (currently part of St Breward Branch), with residents of Sladesbridge and part of Egloshayle also included. A programme of events has been planned, though the first important task will be the European election on 4 June – the first day of the Royal Cornwall Show – not great timing for residents of the Duchy, but that is what postal votes are for!  28th March is the closing Meet of the season at Colquite and we hope that foot followers at least will come along after the riders have set off to join Sian Flynn for a cup of coffee. Further details from Abigail Kirby-Harris on 01208-850651

ST TUDY PLAYGROUP

Already March is here, but we've kicked off our fundraising with a thoroughly morale-raising £380 from bag packing at Asda checkouts - thank you to all the parents and children who gave up their Saturday, and a BIG thanks to all the customers who donated their change to us.  It all added up!  However, we're a long way from getting the Preschool back on financial track, so next up we have Bingo night at the St Tudy Village Hall.  This is a joint venture with the Friends of St Tudy Primary School and we hope that bingo lovers and novices alike will turn out for a night of prizes, refreshments and fun. £1 entrance fee on the door.

The evening kicks off at 7pm on Saturday, 7th March - first game starts at 7.30pm.  Look out for posters around the village with more details.

We're also hosting a coffee morning in The Clink on Saturday, 21st March with tombola - we'd love to see you there.

We'd also like to thank Bodmin Joint Firework Committee for their very generous donation to the Preschool - an unexpected surprise!

The new day and time for the Baby and Toddler Group has proved successful - as well as seeing the preschoolers 'at work' at the other end of the hall, they seem more awake in the mornings!  If you would like to come along for a cuppa and let your little ones play for a couple of hours (with a drink and snack), our group runs on Thursday mornings from 9 - 11am at St Tudy Village Hall.  It's very informal, just pop in (you may have to knock on the door to be let in); first session is free, £2 per child thereafter. Susie Ballerstedt Treasurer

ST TUDY PLAYING FIELD NEWS

In the January Magazine, I explained that the Playing Field Trust had submitted a bid under the North Cornwall Community Play Programme, for funding to improve the play facilities at the Playing Field. Unfortunately, I have now been advised that this bid was not successful.

However, there is another funding programme called Playbuilder which is now inviting bids, so there is scope for the village to come up with a new proposal. In order to have a fair chance of success on this scheme we will need design input from a wide cross-section of the community, and in particular from the youngsters of St Tudy. In addition, we are looking for volunteer effort at the project planning stage and would welcome assistance from anyone who has expertise in landscape design, groundworks, play area construction, costing, feasibility studies, technical drawing and bid documentation preparation.

St Tudy Primary School has kindly offered to act as hosts for the Playbuilder Design Club. So if you would like to learn more about the project, or would like to join the bid preparation team, please contact me (see below) or Mrs Karen Holmes at St Tudy School (tel. 01208 850548).

ST TUDY W I

Dear Ladies of St Tudy,

With our AGM in March, St Tudy Women’s Institute will be coming to the end of yet another busy and interesting year. We are all good friends with one another and enjoy getting together at our monthly meeting on every third Friday evening. We have a great programme planned for 2009/10. In April, we shall have Richard Austin on his work as a sculptor. In May, Mr Tappin from Bonham’s Antiques will be valuing our “heirlooms”. Something quite different in June when Rosemary Slee will be demonstrating quick dishes for one or two. There’s even an evening on nightwear and swimwear, later on! Why not come and see for yourself? Any age welcome – there’s something for everyone.

Yours sincerely,

The President and Committee of St Tudy W I.

ART OF THE COMMUNITY AND THE AIR AMBULANCE

A new community services support initiative to raise funds for the Cornwall Air Ambulance is being launched by local artist Anna Corns. Anna says: “Without the Air Ambulance, emergency journeys off the Moor would be an even worse nightmare and therefore I want to recognise its important place in our community’s existence by asking other local artists to join with me in helping to support it, even in the smallest of ways.”

Anna, who lives in St Breward, is one of a wide group of artists who live and work in the Bodmin Moor community. To mark her own support of the new initiative, she will be showing her work from this month at the Old Inn and Restaurant in St Breward, with all of the commission from sales of her paintings there going to the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust.

In addition, Anna has organised a Wine & Jazz Night for Thursday 12th March to raise funds for the Air Ambulance service as well as officially launch “Art of the Community” with live jazz, wine tasting, tasty nibbles, raffle and of course, a chance to view Anna’s latest work.

Artists interested in getting involved in the initiative, in whichever way, should contact Anna on 01208 850844. Tickets for the Wine & Jazz Night, which takes place from 7-9pm at the Old Inn & Restaurant in St Breward, can be purchased for £4 from either The Old Inn on 01208 850711 or from Anna direct.

FROM REVEREND MARGARET

We have been experiencing a very sad time in St Tudy with the deaths of two very well known and respected members of the community. Sadly Ron Skyner (Captain Ron) died on 22nd January and Kevin Bartlett died suddenly on 14th February. They will both be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families.

I do hope that everyone throughout the Benefice have now recovered from the viruses that have been around and that we can look forward to a healthier spring.

Lent is now upon us and it is a time when we should re-charge out spiritual lives. There are Lent Groups happening throughout all the churches in the Benefice so please feel free to join one of them.

The churches are always open throughout every day for private prayer. I am always very happy to take Communion to anyone who cannot get to church. Please feel free to contact me.

On Wednesday 11th March at 12 noon, Bishop Tim (our new bishop of Truro) will be celebrating at a Eucharist in St Petroc’s Church, Bodmin. This is open to everyone in the Deanery and Bishop Tim is keen to meet as many people as possible on that occasion. Please come along if you are free. There is a lunch in church afterwards provided by the church members. If you will be staying for the lunch then please let me know by 2nd March, as they would like a rough idea of numbers.

Finally from me, Sue Dibble has now produced labels for the new hymn books. If you would like to sponsor a hymn book, please let the churchwardens, or Sue or myself know then we can put your label in the book. Samples of the labels are as follows. The Hymn Book has been sponsored by ………………………In Loving Memory of …………………. To celebrate the Baptism of ………………… To celebrate the birth of …………………….. To celebrate the Marriage of ………….. Sue is quite willing to do other dedications of your choice.

                                                                                   Every blessing Margaret

ST TUDY THURSDAY AFTERNOON CLUB

Undoubtedly, the inclement weather or illness was the reason for such a small attendance at the farewell party on 12th February. However, everyone had a very enjoyable afternoon, with much laughter, games, prizes, drinks and party food. Many thanks to Jane and Ivy.                                   JOHN EDWARDS

Dear Friends

One of the criticisms sometimes levelled at the church concerns the various denominations and if we, as Christians, can’t work together what hope is there. It is a valid point and yet there are reasons for our separation, which can be beneficial. Firstly, there are some points of theology, the study of God, upon which we cannot agree. However, what this can say to us all is that God is too complicated for any of us to fully understand and this means that He can and does speak to each of us, in our own situation. Whoever we are and wherever we are God is there for us, wanting to guide, strengthen and love us. Secondly, we worship in different ways and this can only be good because by having several churches we can offer several different ways of coming to God. Since we are all different and express ourselves in different ways the various denominations make God available to more people.

Having said this it is good that we can work together sometimes. I really enjoy those services and celebrations when I can work with my colleagues in other denominations as it widens my experience and adds depth to my worship.

So it is with enthusiasm that I can tell you how Methodists, Anglicans and, in Tintagel, Roman Catholics have agreed to work together on a Lent Bible Study course. The course is called "These Three... Faith, Hope and Love". It is a five week course written by John Young and it features on CD such eminent people as Bishop Tom Wright, Anne Atkins, The Abbot of Worth, Professor Frances Young and Dr David Hope. It will be held in various churches and homes and led by various clergy leaders. Our idea is that you can join any of the groups and if for any reason you have to miss one you can go to an alternative venue at a different time so you can keep the continuity going.

I do hope some of you will be able to come along and explore what you believe and what God is saying to you at this time. May God bless you.                                                                 Stella.

St Tudy Thursday Afternoon Club

Well, we finally had our little party on Thursday 12th February in the Village Hall.  Due to various illnesses and other commitments we were a select little group.  We tried to work out who was who from the childhood photographs.  (Ivy got everyone right, surprise, surprise!) We had a “memory” game based on the conveyor belt, complete with cuddly toy.  Some could remember more than others, but Margaret won with 18 out of the 20 articles on the stage.  Perhaps it was the sherry that helped or hindered!  We played beetle, then we had another drink to accompany the assorted food and lastly the bran tub and a free raffle for the remaining chocolates and wine.

It’s sad that the club has run its course as those who continued to give support over the months all enjoyed the meetings, whether it was a slide show, a talk, an outing or just a get together.  Maybe in a few months’ time enthusiasm will return and it can be re-started by someone else, as it’s a real shame that there is no regular afternoon entertainment for those villagers further up the age ladder.  So – from Ivy and Jane – thank you to everyone for your help and your company!

BALLPOOL PRIZE BINGO

St Tudy Garden Produce Association

A good crowd filled the seats at the meeting on 9th February.  After a minute’s silent remembrance of Ron Skyner we had a video on “Norfolk Lavender” shown by Philip Martin.  He and his wife brought a large array of lavender type goods for sale and they seemed to do a roaring trade.  It wasn’t, perhaps, the informative talk we were expecting, rather a sales pitch, but nevertheless a pleasant evening.   We meet again on 6th March for a visit to Bodmin Herb and Plant Nursery.  Be at the Village Hall by 10 past 6, with cars if possible, and we’ll sort out who can go with whom.

Future things to note:  on Saturday 10th May we’re having a plant sale and coffee morning.  On 1st March the village allotments will be ready for those who have applied.  At our recent Schedule Committee Meeting it was decided that the Cup, which will be in memory of Bernice Hancock, will be for the Best Kept Allotment.  Judging will take twice, around the end of July and the beginning of September and the Cup presented at the Autumn Show.  We anticipate great competition!!  Finally, the Spring Show will be on Saturday 28th March: amongst other classes in the handicrafts section will be a photograph of St Tudy in the Snow – highly appropriate in view of the recent weather and all those out and about with their cameras!  If you don’t receive a schedule and want to enter in any of the classes please ring Peggy on 851367.  AND PLEASE WILL LAST YEAR’S WINNERS RETURN THEIR TROPHYS IN GOOD TIME AND GOOD CONDITION!                                                                  Jane King

St Tudy Allotment Association

On 3rd, 4th and 5th March volunteers are required to help pull beech saplings for the perimeter fence of the new allotments. We will be meeting at 10.30am at the bus shelter in St Tudy on 3rd March. We have been allotted an area of woodland on the Pencarrow estate and with Heaven Scent Conservation Team the beech will be pulled and then replanted in St Tudy.

Come along for one or more days, whatever you can spare.  Please bring your own tools and refreshments and you may need transport.

We are grateful to Pencarrow Estate and Heaven Scent Conservation Team for their generous support of our exciting new community project.

For further details please contact Lindy Creighton-Clarke 851406.

FRIENDS OF ST MABYN CHURCH

At the Friends Committee Meeting in January, various fundraising events for 2009 were discussed and we are pleased to announce that the Bodmin College Jazz Orchestra will be playing again either on the Green or, if wet, in the Church on Friday 10th July (6.30pm to 9pm).  This will be their last performance of the school year and half the proceeds will go to the Orchestra, which has two years in which to raise money for its tour of the USA in 2010.  The other half will go to The Friends of St Mabyn Church. In the meantime our Secretary, Esther Dudley, has been busy investigating options for the cleaning and restoration of the painting on the north wall of the Church, which depicts the Deposition of Christ.  The beautiful Hext Family Memorial Window is in serious need of restoration, and improvements to the Church lighting and heating are also being considered.  Needless to say, all of these improvements are costly but, hopefully, they will be met one way or another - with the help of our very good ‘Friends.’

‘The Friends,’ who are not necessarily Churchgoers, was established to assist with the restoration, preservation, repair, maintenance, improvement and beautification of the Parish Church of St Mabyn and of the monuments, fittings, and fixtures in the Church and the two Churchyards.  Thus, Friends’ funds are channelled exclusively into local and visible areas of need.

Raising funds at this particular time is far from easy but there are so many ways in which well-wishers can participate and make a difference without exhausting an already tight budget.  An occasional hour or two of your time to help out where needed can be invaluable, and unwanted new items can be donated and used to raise funds for raffles, resale etc.   Cake and preserve makers always make a tremendous difference and new and original ideas for fundraising are always welcome. What’s more, we would be very pleased to hear from anyone who could give a suitably entertaining talk at one of our regular Meals in St Mabyn Village Hall (tel Gage Williams 01208 841378).

Many of the concerts and events organised by both the Restoration Committee and “Friends” during the past couple of years have, in fact, been free. The Flower Festival was also free as was the Duck Race; folk were able to make a donation or buy a ticket at their discretion and according to their means. Those who enjoy the annual Church fete also do so for only a very modest entrance charge.

During 2009 we hope very much to meet up again with those who have supported us so well in the past as well as those who have yet to discover how enjoyable our functions are and just how welcome they will be!

Membership and enquiries to Liz 01208 841378 or Audrey 01208 841607.
