Dear Friends

As I write this, the scandal of MP’s expenses is still very prominent in the news.  I guess, like everyone else, I should express horror and disgust about the greed and selfishness of the culprits. However, rather, I see it as yet another sign of the age in which we live when we have been taught to grab whatever we can for ourselves and never mind anyone else.

Added to this, is the, to my mind, immorality of the huge sums paid to footballers and film stars (and bankers), which have led to extravagant and destructive life styles together with feeding the jealousy of many others who will never reach the realms of enough, let alone wealth. When so few have so much who can blame the not so lucky wanting more.

And yet Jesus warns against these excesses.  He says that the wealth we store up on earth is too easily lost to thieves and moths and rust (and the falling stock markets and roguish bankers); whereas, the treasures we store up in heaven - the wealth that comes from helping one another and sharing what we have - will not only be remembered and rewarded and increased by God but will lead to a better life for everyone. Jesus continues on this theme by saying that where our treasure is there is our heart also. Do we want to be like the retired chairman of RBS hoarding an undeserved pension and hated by everyone or like Mother Theresa and others who are remembered for their goodness?

Of course, achieving the high standards of Mother Theresa is not easy but if we can strive to be a little bit more like her, helping and caring for one another, and a little less like some of our MPs then we can all look forward to a better and more settled future. May your heavenly treasures continue to multiply and grow. God bless.

ST MABYN GARDEN CLUB

In May, members were entertained with a very interesting talk on The Cottage Garden by Beryl Davies, who showed us a variety of plants in flower and answered  many questions by members on how to get the best results from a cottage garden. The plant stall did a thriving trade and it is hoped that members will continue to bring plants to sell on behalf of the Garden Club, when we meet again in the Village Hall in October.

This year the destination for our annual outing was Knightshayes Court, near Tiverton, Devon, which is a lovely and imposing Victorian country house built in the Gothic style. The National Trust has tastefully restored the house back to the time of Pre-Raphaelite age of Arthurian romance. The very helpful guides answered fully all the queries about the house and the family Heathcote-Amery who lived there. The parklands and gardens surrounding the house were magnificent. Main features were the lily pool garden, topiary, specimen trees and rare shrubs. The most outstanding feature was the impressive Victorian walled kitchen garden that has been restored to full production. We returned home tired (and a bit damp) after having enjoyed our day out.

The Club now rests for the summer and we meet again on 9th September at the bus shelter, St Mabyn at 1.30pm for a visit to Pengelly Nurseries, Hewaswater, St Austell. Our 2009/2010 programme is now available and we have a variety of interesting talks including Garden History, Herbs and Growing Vegetables, starting 14th October at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, St Mabyn. Please do not hesitate to contact me Angela Bunney 01208 841511 for more details on any of the above. If you have an interest in gardening and enjoy congenial company St Mabyn garden Club is the place for you.

ST TUDY PARISH COUNCIL

UNITARY COUNCIL ELECTIONS 4th JUNE 2009
These will be held on 4th June (the same day as the European Parliamentary elections and the start of the Royal Cornwall show). The Unitary Council elections are called, following the dissolution of the County and the District Councils, for you to elect a representative for your division. The Boundary Commission has decreed that St Tudy becomes part of the St Issey division, which comprises St Eval, St Issey, part of Egloshayle, St Breock, Washaway, St Mabyn and St Tudy.

The Parish Council met on 29th April with apologies from Cllr Selby.  There were no members of the public present. The Council stood for a minute's silence in remembrance of former Parish Councillor Mr Colin Bartlett. There were two planning applications, Mr and Mrs Harris, Wetherham Heights, extension and alteration to an existing building and Mr and Mrs Eastlake, Little Acre, erection of a double garage. The Council had no objections to the two applications.

Due to the high cost of insurance, the Clerk was asked to obtain alternative
quotations. It was confirmed that the set of hand bells held by the Council
are insured for the replacement cost of £1,080. Ideas were sought from everyone in St Tudy for a possible Village Party to be held in 2010 to celebrate the first decade of the 21st Century or anything more significant.

The Parish Council meets in the Village Hall at 7pm on the last Wednesday
of each month (emergencies only in August and December). The public are
welcome to attend and can raise any issues at the beginning of the meeting or
stay to hear how the Council operates on your behalf.             Mev Shelley

ST MABYN CHURCH FETE

This year’s fete is to be held on The Green at St Mabyn on Saturday 20th June. It will be opened at 2.30pm by Rev Margaret Millson, preceded by the ringing of the church bells.

To entertain us this year we are delighted to have The Saffron Maids, a group of lady morris dancers, as well as Maypole dancing by the pupils of St Mabyn School. There will be children’s sports, Tug-of-War and a big raffle. Cream teas will be served under the Chestnut tree and all the usual stalls that make the afternoon such a happy one.

Please make a note in your diary to come along and enjoy a great family afternoon with us. Proceeds go towards St Mabyn Church funds. There is disabled access onto The Green and the Fete will go ahead even if the day is wet.        COLIN HYDE

By popular request he has agreed to give another concert on Saturday 27th June at 7.30pm in St Tudy Church. St Tudy Church Fete - St Tudy Treats Stall

Combining the jam stall with the cake stall has been very successful for the last couple of years so we are going to continue. But we need your help - we need produce to sell!  Homemade cakes, jams, jellies & chutneys would be very much appreciated, also quiches and individual dishes sweet or savoury.  Contributions can be brought to the stall on the day, if possible before the fete actually starts!  Or they can be left at Cavalier Cottage before 12 noon please.  If you have any queries as to what would be a suitable contribution, please contact either Sue Dibble on 01208 850748 or Edna Alford on 01208 851261.

TREE RINGS CONTINUED

Our editing of George Dyke’s article on Tree Rings in April’s Magazine has led to some omissions, which Mr Dyke has asked us to correct as follows:

“The report includes several tables and diagrams, but these are difficult to refer to when mentioned because the binding is excessively springy, and I needed two heavy weights to hold the pages flat. In the plan of the church the tower is labelled “South Transept”.

ST TUDY BELLRINGERS

For years, bellringing was something I had always wanted to have a go at, but pressure of time meant I had done nothing about it. A few years ago, I went along to a practice session at St Breward and tried it. I now ring at St Tudy and love it, although I still make lots of mistakes.

Most people love to hear the bells ringing but we are really struggling for people to ring at St Tudy and desperately need some new people to learn, so that they can help out on Sunday mornings or for weddings or funerals. If this is something you have always yearned to try or maybe you would like to return to bellringing, please get in touch with me, Joy Weaving, 851217 or Alan Millson on 851691. Come on, just have a go!

THANKS

Gary and Jean Keat would like to thank all family and friends for a wonderful Golden Wedding day on 9th May.  Thanks also to everyone who came to celebrate this day at the village hall. It was very much appreciated. We raised £661.10 for Precious Lives appeal. Again thank you to everyone.      Gary and Jean Keat

Anthea and John Lobb would like to thank everyone who gave donations at our Golden Wedding celebrations in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care. A sum of £840.00 has been forwarded to them. Also many thanks for the lovely cards and flowers.

ST TUDY CHURCH FETE

The Church Fete will be held on 13th June in the Rectory Gardens by kind permission of Rev Margaret and Alan Millson. In the event of inclement weather, we shall use the Village Hall. Karen Holmes, Headteacher at St Tudy School, has agreed to open the Fete at 2.30pm.

We would be grateful for items for sale on the following stalls: household (Jennie Muir and Margaret Shelley), plants (Brian Lamerton), mystery parcel (Patsy Kempthorne and Debbie Matulewicz), treats and cakes, (Sue Dibble, Margaret Bevan, Edna Alford and the team), books and toys (Joy Knight and Lydia Westbrook), sweets (Barbara Lynn), glass stall (Geoffrey and Hazel Gibbons), bottle stall (Joy Weaving), tin mine (Stephen and Diana Richards), raffle (Ken and Val Metcalfe), tombola (Jennie Keat and Liz Callaway). There will be cream teas, ice cream in addition to bowling, face painting and punch and judy. Music will be provided by the St Minver Silver Band. Mothers of children from the school have offered to help with refreshments, but other volunteers to help to set up the stalls and dismantle at the end of event would be of great help.

Any reader not presently actively engaged in looking after a stall who would like to assist, is invited to contact Ken Alford (851261), Jennie Muir (851293) or Geoffrey Gibbons (851267). Geoffrey would also be very pleased to receive gifts for the stalls or prizes for the raffle at 4 Chestnut Close. The best way to make this event a success is to attend and enjoy the occasion.

St Tudy Garden Produce Association

The outing on May Day Bank Holiday Monday went off very well, lunch at Trelawney Garden Centre at Ashford then on to Marwood Hill Gardens.  The weather was a bit cool but for the able-bodied there were lots of areas to explore in the gardens and a tearoom for all.

The plant sale and coffee morning on Saturday 9th May was very successful, raising over £240 in profits for club funds. Very many thanks to all who supported us and especially to Ruth Wright for helping out with the coffee and Sue Dibble with the plant sales as helpers were a bit thin on the ground due to other prior commitments!  I had thought of suggesting self-service coffee making!

If anyone would like to enter the annual hanging baskets and planted troughs competitions please give me a ring (850222) – you may enter up to three in each category. First judging will take place early in July and the second tranche in August before the Summer Show on 8th August. Don’t be shy – please enter something and make the village look pretty!                                                                                     Jane King

ST TUDY PRE-SCHOOL

Congratulations to Dave Ricketts for completing the North Cornwall Tors Cycle Ride, and thank you for raising a magnificent £285.00 for the Pre-school.  We are now registered to claim Gift Aid, so we will be able to claim an extra 25p for every £1 donated by taxpayers.  At the time of writing, some of our parents and staff will have completed the Bodmin Ten Tors, also raising funds, in the region of £450, for Pre-school. Well done and thank you to everyone who gave up their Sunday to support us.

The children are in full swing with spring, growing potatoes and vegetables in every sort of container possible. They have been playing in our very own 'rock pool' as part of our theme of learning all about water. We have lots of fun things happening in the summer term including a visit from Newquay Zoo, a trip to the beach, and a fire engine coming to the pre-school!! Rachael Temple and Liz Hustwayte have completed a full day of Early Years Foundation Stage training, and Kelly is hoping to enrol on her NVQ 3 course shortly.

The Committee remain busy with preparations for a capital bid for a new purpose-built pre-school. We are currently looking at two possible sites, and will be taking every opportunity to consult with parents and the community about how you would like to see the village pre-school grow.  Look out for posters with details of upcoming events.

CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES

Love and best wishes to Peter Kirby-Harris and Grace Kim who were married in London on 2 May.

FRIENDS OF ST MABYN CHURCH

The Friends of St Mabyn Church celebrated their 5th AGM on Thursday 7th May in St Mabyn Village Hall.  The wine flowed freely, the buffet met the ‘Friends’ usual high standards, and a good time was had by all.

Chairman Liz Williams opened the meeting with a résumé of events during the past year, with particular mention of the £20,000 FOSMC donated to the Restoration Appeal.  This was followed by re-election of the principal officers, thus Liz continues as Chairman, Esther Dudley as Secretary, and Carole Grigg as Treasurer. The remaining members of the Committee are Colin Hyde, Angela Bunney, Sue Morris, George Dyke, Gage Williams, Priscilla Hext, Reverend Margaret and Alan Millson, Audrey Cooke.

Our proposed speaker was unable to attend due to a prior commitment.  However, George Dyke stepped in to bridge the gap with a highly humorous and entertaining talk largely based on his recent account in the Magazine.

George and Molly Dyke have been busy collating and packaging the Friends’ new-style notelets, which are currently for sale in St Mabyn Village Post Office and St Mabyn Church. The notelets are packed singly and in packs of three and six, and show photographs of St Mabena taken from a panel in a window in the North Wall of the Church, St Mabyn Church taken from the Church Steps and The Hext Family Memorial Window in the Chancel.

Esther Dudley has also been busy organising the removal of the painting on the south wall of the Church, which depicts the Deposition of Christ.  The painting is presently away for restoration and cleaning and, hopefully, upon its return it may be positioned so that it can be viewed to better advantage.

Our next fundraiser will be Jazz on the Green on Saturday July 11th when The Bodmin College Jazz Orchestra will be playing on the Green or, if wet, in the Church from 6.30pm to 9pm.  This will be their last performance of the school year and half the proceeds will go to the Orchestra, which has one year remaining in which to raise money for its tour of the USA in 2010.  The other half will go to The Friends of St Mabyn Church, so please support this extremely talented band of youngsters.  Video clips of their 2008 performance in St Mabyn Church can be seen on U-Tube (tag St Mabyn Church.) For details of membership please contact 01208 841276. AUDREY COOKE

North Cornwall Tor

Thanks to all who sponsored me! A very big thank you to all who sponsored me!

I must confess to being somewhat apprehensive on the morning and did wonder whether I would complete the course. Luckily the weather was glorious - mind you this did make the hills that little bit harder to cycle up and boy did I need to keep my liquids up – in all I drank about 3.5 litres of water that morning! In total it took me 3 hours 45 minutes to complete the 43 mile course including some stops to have a drink etc. I am very pleased to say that I raised £285.50 in total for St Tudy Pre-school.                                                                                         DAVID RICKETTS

ST TUDY W I

Our friends from Egloshayle, Trevanson and St Issey & Little Petherick WIs joined us for the St Camelia Group Meeting on Wednesday 13th May. It is every President’s nightmare when the speaker phones to say she cannot make it at the last minute! Lady Mary Holborrow was delayed on the Isles of Scilly as no helicopters were flying! After many phone calls, Jeremy Northcott very kindly said he would come and show us his photographic skills – Lillian Lamerton, Vice-President, and the rest of the members were very grateful to him. Many thanks again to you Jeremy. Even though there were one or two hitches along the way we had a very enjoyable evening with good company, good food and good entertainment from Christine Woolf and The Delphi Players! Well done Lillian – next time will go more smoothly!!

Maggie Lobb, on her return from Denman College, where she visited Inspector Morse’s Oxford, spoke of her attendance at the Spring Countdown at the Hall for Cornwall, where she heard the third wife of Fred Dibnah give a fascinating talk on her life with Fred. Before they married she had to climb a chimney, cross the top and back down again without harness! She had the delegates spellbound! Maggie then introduced Mr Roger Tappin from Bonhams Auction House, Par who spoke of his beginnings in the London Auction Houses and interesting little stories of his finds over the 40 years he had been involved in the business. There are still items out there if you look for them! He then talked about the selection of “valuables” we took along with some very pleasant surprises for some of the members! Tea followed and the prizewinners were 1st Jenny Muir, 2nd Janet Northcott and 3rd Lillian Lamerton. Flower of the month was won by Sue Dibble, 2nd Beryl Starr and 3rd Jenny Muir. Our next meeting is on 19th June, when Rosemary Slee will be cooking for one or two – quick dishes and talking of her experiences on the TV show  “Step up to the Plate”. New members are always welcome.                                        J JASPER

WHAT HENRY VIII DID FOR US: (ANGLICANS)

Almost five hundred years ago, on 24th June 1509 Henry VIII was crowned in Westminster Abbey. There was general rejoicing at the event, yet only 38 years later in 1547 he died, and was not much mourned by most of the country. For that there were many reasons but his handling of religious issues was at the heart of that situation. On 11th October 1521, the then Pope had bestowed upon Henry the title Defensor Fidei (Defender of the Faith) and apart from a short period of six years under Queen Mary, every monarch has held the title to the present day. (The letters FD on coins perpetuates this.) The title was awarded for Henry’s support for the Catholic Church in his book In Defence of the Seven Sacraments, yet only 13 years later in 1534, his Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy under which Henry rejected control of the Church in England by the Pope in Rome and obtained authority over all clergy in England; his self-appointment as Supreme Head of the Church in England said it all. All churches had now to have a Bible in English instead of Latin. Henry had also in the mid 1530s, in an act of unparalleled vandalism, dissolved the monasteries, scattering the priors, monks and nuns far and wide in a demonstration of his authority over the Church in England. He had changed it out of all recognition though it was still “Catholic”, but the changes brought with them an inexorable move towards religious reformation driven mostly by political motivation.

You may well ask what all this has to do with us? Only this, that a mere 15 years after the Act of Supremacy, the Book of Common Prayer, devised by Thomas Cranmer, was in 1549 ordered to be used throughout the kingdom by Henry’s son, the 12 year old Edward VI, (and you will remember the violent reaction to that in our part of Cornwall). Gone for all time was the Latin of the Catholic services or the Cornish in which some were conducted. The new Prayer Book was the logical conclusion to the policies of Edward’s father all those years before, and with some alterations, that book we still use in our services today. That is what Henry did for us Anglicans, though there remains some doubt that it was what he had intended!! Dei Gracias?
