Dear Friends
On hearing this week that the footballer Ronaldo has been sold for £80m I began to wonder what is a person worth? Can anyone really be worth such a vast sum whilst around the world millions are starving? Or are we setting Ronaldo up for a fall like we set up the remarkable Britain’s Got Talent star Susan Boyle? As one newspaper put it “from unknown to global celebrity to the Priory (psychiatric clinic) in the space of eight weeks”. Then last week on the eve of the elections, Hazel Blears resigned from her cabinet post with bitter words designed to bring down the Prime Minister and the government and presumably to enhance her standing in a new government. As it turns out her attempts to sway the balance failed and now she is left trying to pick up the pieces and take back her words and actions in the forlorn hope of rebuilding her career.
The disciples James and John were lowly fishermen when Jesus called them to come and follow him. He nurtured them and protected them as he prepared them for a future in the limelight. But the power went to their head and, with dreams of glory in their eyes, they asked Jesus if they could sit at his right and left when he became king. They wanted those treasured positions of power and wealth and fame. Jesus replied that God would decide their position in life and encouraged them to put aside such aspirations and instead to concentrate on trying to help other people. It seems to me that when we decide to bypass God, when we think ourselves more important than we are, then we are setting ourselves up for disappointment. It is a fine balance between lusting after the impossible and wanting to achieve our best and when we get that balance wrong the fall is every bit as damaging as falling from a great height. But when we get it right we know that God is in control and all will ultimately be well. May the stars in your eyes bring light to your life. God bless you. Stella
St Breward Conservatives
Lunch with your Councillor! Our three local Council divisions have rather curious boundaries! St Breward Parish falls into the division of St Teath, which includes Advent and Michaelstow, and is bisected by the Camelford Division, which includes the hamlet of Helstone. St Breward Branch, which covers Blisland, Cardinham and also Helland (now part of the Lanivet Division), represented by Mick Martin, is organising monthly lunches at the Camelford Conservative Club, where residents can join their local councillor and hear the latest from the County Council and how your local man is defending your local interests. The first will be on Friday 10 July when Mick Martin will join Keith Goodenough, the Conservative member for the Camelford division. A roast lunch, including coffee is offered for £6, please book direct with the Club on 01840 212225. Further details from Branch Chairman Mrs Abigail Kirby-Harris on 01208 850651. * * * * * * * * *

MISCANTHUS
Burlerrow Farm, St Mabyn, has been growing Miscanthus for seven years using the crop as a renewable energy source to heat office units on their farm. More recently they have been providing Miscanthus (elephant grass) for use as animal bedding. With its own processing plant it can now produce livestock bedding from its own crops and from other local growers.
The new barn has equipment for processing the Miscanthus. By spring (March to May) the cane is ready for harvest. It ideally has a low moisture content (as little as 15-20% if harvested in late winter or spring). The criteria for the ideal energy crop is high dry matter yield (15%). The lower the moisture content the better the efficiency of the chip. Harvest is accomplished by the use of forage harvesters, which chop the stems into small chips - these are dried, processed and packed for sale. March to May is the annual busy time for harvesting and drying of the Miscanthus. James (Mutton) tells us, that this year they have been using a temporary drier fan. Next season there will be a replacement machine with lower noise volume and will be running no later than 8.00-8.30 pm during harvest time. Cllr Helen Barrett

At our Committee Meeting on 10th June, details of our forthcoming events were discussed at length and we are very pleased to announce that there will be another series of our very popular meals with speaker in St Mabyn Village Hall, hopefully during November, February and March 2010. Further details will be available later when the speakers have confirmed their availability.
We are delighted that Gage and Liz (our Chairman) Williams have agreed to host another BBQ at Menkee (near Longstone) starting at 6pm on Saturday 1st August. Tickets will be £6 each (£3 for under 12s) and everyone will be very welcome at what is always an extremely friendly and enjoyable family occasion. If wet, the BBQ will take place under cover. To book please phone Audrey on 01208 841607 or email audreycooke@live.com.
A date has yet to be confirmed for our Wine and Wisdom (with refreshments) evening in the autumn. This event will take place in St Mabyn Village Hall.
Friends’ have now produced colourful postcards for sale depicting St Mabena, taken from a panel in a window in the north wall of the Church. The price is 25p each, or five for £1, and are for sale in the village post office and St Mabyn Church.
Our next fundraiser will be Jazz on the Green on Saturday 11th July when The Bodmin College Jazz Orchestra will be playing on the Green (if wet, in the Church) from 6.30pm to 9pm. Entry is £5 for adults and £3 for under 18s. Children under 6 years old FREE! Please bring chairs and picnics. This will be the orchestra’s last performance of the school year and half the proceeds will go to the Orchestra, which has one year remaining in which to raise money for its tour of the USA in 2010. The other half will go to The Friends of St Mabyn Church, so please support this extremely talented band of youngsters.

FROM REVEREND MARGARET
The St Tudy Fete was a great success. We were very fortunate with the weather. I should like to add my personal thanks to all those who helped in any way. First of all a big thank you to Ken for organising it. Secondly, to the “tea ladies” from school and thirdly to John McLeod, who at the last minute fixed up a sound system. Thank you also to all stallholders and all who supported it. Although we raised about £1,350 we were £1,000 down on last year. We need to start thinking about next year’s Fete and any offers of help towards organising it.
I was very sorry to hear of the death of Dorothy Trusler. She will be greatly missed. Our love and our prayers go out to Peter at this very sad and difficult time.
I am hoping to resume my full time duties on 1st August. As a gesture of thanksgiving we shall be holding a Songs of Praise in the Rectory Garden (church if wet) on Sunday 2nd August at 5pm. Please bring a chair with you. I do hope that there will be a large crowd of people as the event is open to everyone. Birthday cake and wine will be served at the end of the service to celebrate Alan’s birthday.
Finally, I wish all the children leaving St Tudy and St Mabyn Schools the best of luck and every blessing in the future. I also hope that the children returning in September (and staff) have a lovely summer holiday. Our prayers and good wishes go out to Stella Long as she prepares for her new ministry.

PARTY IN THE VILLAGE
In the year of the Queen’s Jubilee the village held a tea party in the centre of the village together with music and other activities This event was a success and the Parish Council would appreciate all organisations in the village to give consideration and support in holding another party without any excuse other than St Tudy villagers coming together and having an enjoyable time. It is envisaged the event would take place on Saturday 7th August 2010. However this is just a suggested date and should give sufficient lead in time to organise the event. Will organisations and individuals please give your views on this suggestion to Brian Lamerton. Chris Selby

Holiday worship
We always enjoy going to church when away on holiday - and not only for the real pleasure it gives us to participate in the service but also for the interest in seeing how the Anglican Church operates elsewhere and meeting the local members of the congregation; it helps us feel more part of where we are. Christmas morning in the Anglican Church in Galle, in Sri Lanka was very moving and the huge congregation (all colours and several languages!) made us feel very welcome and not far from home at all. Some other places we have been, do not have a full time resident priest but the regular members of the congregation are always welcoming and cheerful. Tresco, for example, makes its vicarage available as a holiday home to C of E priests, for two week stretches, and the holidaying vicar takes the services both there and on Bryher (one told me how delightful it was to be taken to church by boat!) The same system operates in Taormina, in Sicily, where we have just spent a most wonderful weeks holiday. The Anglican St George's Church is part of the Diocese of Europe and offers a delightful flat for a month at a time for the benefit of a resident congregation of 14! But last Sunday we were 25 in total, led by the Rev Terry Ranson, from Gloucestershire, whose wonderful strong baritone gave such a great lead that we almost didn't notice the lack of an organist! After the service his lovely wife Joyce dispensed refreshments under the lemon trees in the garden and we much enjoyed chatting to both residents and other holidaymakers - on that day we came from Canada, Cornwall, Northern Ireland and Germany! Welcoming strangers is part of our religious tradition, so, as the holiday season approaches, let’s make sure that we offer a warm welcome to those who come to holiday in our beautiful area. The Royal Cornwall Show is over for another year and although our entry did not win we did of our best! Thank you to Maggie, Sue and Judith – and Jane (Bamford) for her cookery idea. At our July meeting on the 17th, Michael Munds, our village keep fit expert, is coming to advise us on how we can keep fit. Not too strenuous we hope – so come and join us; you will be made most welcome.
There is no meeting in August, but on Friday 28th there will be an afternoon tea party at Maggie Lobb’s, Tree Corner, Tremeer Lane. Everyone is welcome to come along. More details next month. JUDITH JASPER
MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS
On Saturday 30th May, the Rotary Club of Wadebridge held a Cream Tea event at Lower Tamsquite Mill and were entertained by the ladies of Champagne Cornwall Chorus. In addition to the Cream Tea, scones and cakes, the Rotary Club had stalls selling books and plants, together with a raffle. It was a very warm and sunny day and the one hundred plus visitors were very generous with their support. The full amount raised was £841.50 due in no small part to the donations, raffle prizes and people freely giving their time making cakes and scones. A special thank you goes to the Ladies of Champagne Chorus for generously giving their time to support the event, Jo Wootton for the cupcakes, Pauline Gobbitt, Georgina Vine, Ruth at the village shop, Rodda’s, The Glasshouse and of course the villagers, Rotarians and friends for supporting us once again.
The event was held to raise money specifically for the “Memory Café”, which is held twice a month at St Breock School and provides support, fellowship, information and indeed tea, coffee and cakes. The Memory Café is a joint partnership between Cornwall Care, Age Concern and the Rotary Club of Wadebridge and the money raised at this event will secure the future of Memory Café for the next two years. ST TUDY PARISH
COUNCIL Voting for officers of the parish council was unanimous: Mr Brian Lamerton was re-elected as Chairman of the council. Mr Chris Selby was re-elected as Vice Chairman. There were no planning applications. Some discussion was made of the possibility of a St Tudy village community party to be held in August 2010. This is to be the subject of a separate announcement in this Magazine. The council meets on the last Wednesday of the month at 7pm in the village hall, not normally in August and December. The public are always welcome to attend. Mev Shelley
ST MABYN PRE-SCHOOL
St Mabyn Pre-School is holding a Stay and Play session from 9.10am -12.10pm on Wednesday, 8th July. We invite everyone with a small child of or approaching pre-school age to come and have a play with us. We also have a toddler session that runs from 9.10-11.10 every Tuesday. Last month, Gillian Molesworth raised more than £300 for the pre-school by running the Plymouth Half Marathon! Gillian was pleased with her time of 2:09 for the 13.1 mile course, which ended on the Plymouth Hoe on the later May bank holiday. Some supporters came and held up a sign that said "Keep Going Gilly" on top of the formidable hill at Saltram. Each of the pre-school children had left a colourful handprint on the sign, so it was just as if they were all there to cheer! St Mabyn Pre-School also has a new phone number, which is 07929 092 088.

WHITSUNDAY 1549
Whitsunday 2009, being the 460th anniversary of the introduction of the first prayer book in English (as opposed to the Latin rite), was marked by a sung service at Boconnoc of “The Supper of the Lord” and the Holy Communion commonly called The Mass' using (mostly) the 1549 liturgy. A few of us from Michaelstow helped swell the congregation of around seventy who gathered on a beautiful day to participate in Thomas Cranmer's masterly work of presenting for the first time a service of Communion which, in his words, could be ' under-standed of the people'. It went down a lot better in 2009 than it did in Devon & Cornwall in 1549; there was certainly no desire to arm ourselves and march on Exeter as happened then, but it behoves us to remember that those were pretty brutal times and some terrible things were done before the Anglican Church could settle down to a period of relative stability.
It's of interest to note that at that time the Prayer Book actually required that men and women should position themselves on opposite sides of the church. This was dropped from the 1662 edition which is the one used today, along with the rubric (note) that the people should receive the Sacrament in their mouths rather than it being placed in their hands as is (generally) done today. It was good to see so many people, especially young families, participating in a service, which was of such historical interest. 2011 will mark the 400th anniversary of the Authorised Version of the Bible. Take a look at www.2011trust.org to see what is being planned to mark this date around the country. So on we go towards 2012 and the 350th anniversary of the Book of Common Prayer of 1662. Big things are being planned nationally for that one as well, and I hope that at parish level we don't let these anniversaries slip by unmarked. David Ford

St Breward Brownies
Guiding is very rewarding but you’re always very busy, organising something, planning it or doing it! Thought I’d write and share with you some of the Brownies “doings”. We’re preparing to celebrate 100 years of Guiding in 2010 the launch being in September this year and you’ll all hear a lot more about this both in Cornwall and nationally, with centenary teams in both areas preparing amazing events for Rainbows, Brownies, Senior Section Members and Guiders to take part in. St Breward Unit have been raising funds to make sure we have pennies in our Account to have a fabulous 2010 year. Fundraising included a suitcase and tabletop sale kindly hosted by St. Breward Football Club, which benefited Brownies, Guides and the Hut!
As part of our Environment Badge, we got recycling and this included setting up a Girlguiding Recycling Account. This turns old mobiles phones and spent laser printer cartridges (courtesy of David Storr) into money and we have £76.54 in our Recycling Account at the moment. Best of all Julie Arnold has helped me prepare the historical Brownie Registration records and we have reclaimed 7 years backdated gift aid, which came to £852.08 on Brownie subs and donations. Parents are an important part of our Brownie Team and our grateful thanks go to Julie and David for their help.
The Brownie Traditions badge was part of the term as we prepared for and won the District Round of the Halford Trophy. We borrowed some of the old uniform from Archives and had a six night with them dressing up and acting out little plays. Katie Storr pretending to be me was so funny we cried with laughter! Some of our youngest brownies represented us at the Division Round – well done girls. This is a Brownie competition that encourages teamwork, co-ordination and promotes worthwhile knowledge in a fun way. Next term is our “out and about” one as we pancake and paddle, sausage sizzle, ramble and have fun around St. Breward and Blisland all with the “Aim High” badge in mind. If anyone is interested in joining us we do have some places available – as most of our older Brownies will be joining guides in September. Telephone 01208 851156 to arrange a taster. Brownie night is now Thursdays 6.15 to 7.45 at St. Breward Guide unless the programme directs otherwise- and it often does! Marilyn Pluess Barn Owl
