* * * * * * * * *THE CHALLENGES OF 2010
However many or few New Years you may have already encountered it seems to me that each one still has certain special challenges that come with it. As we all enter upon the virgin territory of 2010 may I begin by wishing you and yours twelve months of daily life where you feel secure within yourself, loved by others here or elsewhere and that there is still very much a purpose for you and your life. Of course every New Year does bring with it a distinct area of the 'unknown' either within the family, at work or in other parts of our life and lifestyle. However, it seems to me, that alongside that there are available for us all certain foundations we can build on and pillars we can rest against when required.

Christmas will have been and gone when you read this publication. There is such a build-up to this event and then suddenly, it is all over. However, we hope that you all had a happy and peaceful Christmas and we send you all our good wishes for 2010. We had a very happy concert at Marshgate Village Hall, on Thursday 12th November, at the invitation of the W.I.. Marshgate, is a very small village in rural North Cornwall, and is partly in the parish of Otterham and partly in the parish of St. Juliot. There are only a few farms and houses in the area, plus a village store but has neither pub, nor a Church and relies on the Village Hall for local activities and indeed, the hall is the focus of the surrounding area. At this present time, the building is in a poor state of repair and needs to be replaced. I understand that it was an Army Building in the first instance. Even in a small way, we hope that our concert was able to contribute towards this new much needed meeting place. The Hall was colourfully decorated and included a glittering Christmas tree. The choir sang a variety of songs, ranging from, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ (Queen) to Christmas songs, such as, ’Green Leaves’, from ‘Cano Kernow’– songs and dances from Cornwall, arranged by Steve Tyrrell. Steve Tyrrell played two solos, much to the delight of the audience. The evening was completed with mince pies and mulled wine.
Our next concert was at Orchard Wyndhurst , in Wadebridge on Tuesday 17th November. Again, this was a happy experience, enjoyed by choir and audience alike. Well, except for me – until I had caught my breath. I am pathologically punctual for everything and duly parked in the car park near to Lidls and sat, and sat and sat. After an hour, it did dawn on me that something was wrong – wrong place, wrong date. I will spare you the details but when I eventually found my way to Wyndhurst, with its own car parking, I was out of breath and feeling somewhat foolish. The rest of the choir were there, the audience was there. They all seemed to be grinning!! We had a lovely evening, singing a wide range of songs to an appreciative audience coupled with some excellent refreshments and an invitation to visit them again. Shona Moon gave us one of the highlights of the evening, when she sang an unaccompanied version of, ‘Where are the Roses’, by Lee Sullivan. Christmas concerts at Tintagel and St Tudy, will be reported in the next publication. If you would like to join us, you are always welcome to contact our Musical Director, Janette Man. Another year is upon us and we wish you all a peaceful and memorable 2010.
Our new programme starts in April, but our first subscription we pay in January, so if anyone would like to come to our meeting on the 15th, you would be most welcome. Our speaker is Nicola Harley – our local Macmillan nurse.
We were delighted to win the WI classes at the Wadebridge Primestock Show, where we depicted the Twelve Days of Christmas. Each day was either in the form of cooking; drink; craft and flowers – with computerised additions!
The new programme for 2010-2011 has many good speakers; county events; planned theatre trips and any requests when they arise! Come and join us!
Apologies to readers of the Cornish Guardian, but WI News and Down Your Way dates are sent in each month, but have not been published. There is a hitch between Bodmin and Truro – this I hope will be rectified in 2010!

St Mabyn Church Restoration Appeal - Final report(continued from October 2009)
Grant Applications. Very many were made and some were successful (listed separately as an appendix) Private Benevolence. A design of a roof slope was drawn by David Chadwick, who drew the one for the previous Appeal and donors names were registered on the “slates” and this was available at all the various events, with a request for a minimum donation of £10, though many gave more, and 94 names are inscribed. This now hangs in the Church. Letters were written to all those whom we could trace who had been married or baptised in the Church, and also relatives of those whose funerals had taken place there. This all drew a heart-warming response, confirming the affection in which the building is held. A leaflet about the Friends was always sent. Fund-raising activities. The Appeal was launched at the restaurant at Wenford Bridge owned by resident Ruth Ellery (nee Batten). A friendly evening introduced the “slate” and started the press campaign. The Cornish Guardian has, throughout, been very supportive and allowed us to generate a great deal of publicity. The various village organisations were written to and asked to help. The Scouts were also raising money at this time for the legally required improvements to their hut so residents were very squeezed but the Village Hall Committee agreed to allow free use of the Hall for various events, the Garden Club held a Garden Safari and the School Parents Association shared the proceeds of one of their events. The Young Farmers Club presented a cheque for £1000 at the end of the first year and subsequently followed up with one for £500. It was agreed to try and make the building work too, so a series of concerts was planned. Duchy Opera opened the second season and whilst there was a heavy charge for this, it did offer access to their own mailing list and friends. The Church also benefited from the location fees of several TV programmes, and it is hoped that now it is ”on the map” as a location, this could continue. A series of Coffee Mornings round the village in various private houses generated much goodwill and community spirit, which was most welcome and also raised funds and sold slates. By far the greatest help has been the support of the Friends, who not only ran fund-raising events solely for the Appeal but also made over most of their accumulated funds, to the grand total of £20,000. The success of the Appeal has a great deal to do with their efforts. The pressure had to be maintained right to the end as we did not know what the actual costs would be, and the condition of the EH Grant was that whilst it would be reduced should the costs prove lower, it would NOT be increased if we overran. A setback occurred when the poorly erected temporary roof allowed in heavy rain but prompt action by willing volunteers led by the Churchwardens minimised the damage and the subsequent survey of the organ showed that no lasting damage had been done.
Results - The costs came at below the estimate and the monies raised have permitted the “refund” to the PCC of their Special Repairs Fund, which leads to the hope that the Hext Memorial window will be able to be repaired in due course and the heating system can at last be replaced. The pinnacles at the top of the tower, and the tower roof itself may need work too. Over £3500 of Gift Aid was always carefully included in our budgeting but the VAT refund of over £21,000 is what has made the difference. Conclusion - The Appeal proved a unifying and enjoyable community initiative and it is hoped that the great deal of information gleaned about the Parish and its residents can be incorporated into a proper History, whilst the many narrators are still with us.
Over Sixties Coffee Morning

UNWANTED INTENT
By the time the January Magazine is distributed, we are sad to say that Garlands House will be on the market.
We are both becoming increasingly immobile and in pain, and a Care Home of some sort, if we can manage the fees, is becoming essential.
This is not a Farewell yet. The last thirty years in St Tudy has, if possible, exceeded the prayer that our first caller, the Reverend Darlington (the Methodist Minister) asked us to join with him, “That we should be happy here”. And it breaks our hearts at the thought of leaving. PAM AND LOUIS LE BAILLY

FROM REVEREND MARGARET
First of all I should like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy 2010. January is the month where we look back on the old year and look forward to the new. For some of you it will have been your first Christmas on your own as you have lost your loved ones and for others, it will be one more Christmas to be got through.
I have found 2009 to be a difficult year. Friends have moved house and out of the villages. Several of our college friends have died and left big gaps. Several of our residents have died including Kevin and Colin Bartlett. The tower is not the same without Captain Ron and Colin.
Sadly Jenny Price and Edward George both lost their battle against cancer and Dorothy Trusler and Laleah Selby also passed away. St Mabyn lost well known villagers and Marjorie West, Howard Hoskin and Millicent Lanyon are also sadly missed.
2009 has also been a year when many of us have had spells in hospital or in our sick beds and we have all suffered with the atrocious weather. 2009 however has not been all doom and gloom as we have celebrated several weddings and special birthdays and anniversaries.
We have also had baptisms in all three churches, which are a source of hope and joy for the future and a reminder that each day of our lives is a new beginning.
There is nothing surer that throughout our lives we will all have our fair share of good times and not so good and sometimes we are glad to see the end of some years. Births, baptisms, marriages and death cover the circle of life that has been experienced since the beginning of humankind and will continue long after we are no longer here. We will also have experienced joys and sorrows in the life of our churches. One thing only in life is certain in all this and it is that the love of God is constant, is always us and never fails.
May 2010 be a joyous, happy, healthy and wonderful year for us all. God Bless You. REV MARGARET

I would like to thank the kind villagers of St Tudy for their good wishes, get well cards and flowers following my hip operation in the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Do come along and bring your neighbours, friends and relatives. Free orange juice for children. Proceeds are for village hall funds. * * * * * * * * * THE FRIENDS OF ST MABYN CHURCH
Very many thanks to Richard Jenkin of St Mabyn, who spoke to an extremely attentive audience at our meal in St Mabyn Village Hall on 27th November. His inspirational account of the time he spent teaching deprived youngsters in the township of Port Elizabeth was very well received and much appreciated.
Our next meal with wine, followed by a speaker, will take place in St Mabyn Village Hall on Friday 22nd January, 12 noon for 12.30, when Lady Mary Holborow has very kindly agreed to speak on the history of the Lord Lieutenancy, a title that dates back to the Tudors. Lady Holborow has held office as Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall since 1994, a title that is given to a Monarch's personal representative in a particular area. Reservations for this meal and talk are already being made and, as numbers are limited, we recommend early booking. Admission is £12 (£10 for Members) payable at the door. To reserve a place please 'phone or email Chairman Liz Williams on 01208 841378 (GageWillms@aol.com) or Audrey Cooke on 01208 841607 (audreycooke@live.com.) If you would like to become a Member of Friends’ and benefit from concessions, you can either join on the day or contact Carol Grigg on 01208 841276. Membership remains at only £10 per annum.
The speaker at our meal on Friday 5th March will be Giles Clotworthy, who will talk about his many years working for the National Trust. We are also currently taking bookings for this event.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by at the Friends' stall for a chat at the Mistletoe Fair in St Mabyn on 5th December. As nobody picked the right name for Howard the Hippo, a draw was made from all entries and was won by a very surprised entrant from St Tudy!
A very Happy New Year to everyone. AUDREY COOKE
NEWS FROM ST TUDY PRE-SCHOOL
We are delighted to introduce Sharon Crossley, as the new Pre-School Supervisor. Sharon lives in Wadebridge and has 4 children of her own. Sharon has been in the childcare sector for the past 12 years and also owned and managed her own nursery in Barnsley (South Yorkshire) for the past 5 years.
“Hello I would just like to say a big thank you for the warm welcome which I have received. I am very much looking forward to meeting and working with you all throughout the year ahead and getting to know the children of the Pre-school. However I must say the only thing I am not currently enjoying is the bad weather and can't wait for the sunny days to return!!”
The Pre-school received a very comprehensive IT package from Family Services in November; a laptop complete with microscope, camera, printer and much more besides. The children and staff have had great fun getting to grips with it, in fact the children have been able to show the staff a thing or two!?!
We held two very successful fund raising events in November. Susie Ballerstedt held a very successful Phoenix Cards coffee morning at her house at Treveighan, Michaelstow. Road diversions didn't prevent those determined guests eventually getting to Susie’s! Liz Hustwayte held a Pampered Chef party at her house when everyone enjoyed a relaxing evening with a cooking show, lovely food and the opportunity to buy some lovely kitchenware. Pre-school funds were greatly boosted. Unfortunately our planned Off the Peg Clothes Show in November did not take place because we couldn't sell enough pre-show tickets, which was a huge disappointment especially as the previous show had been well attended. Details of our coffee morning this month will be posted on the web sites www.st-tudy-preschool.org.uk, www.sttudy.org.uk and at various locations in the village. We are hoping to hold another Bingo night in February, so watch the usual spaces for posters with more details.
Pre-school returns to the Village Hall on Wednesday, 6th January and Mother and Toddlers returns on Tuesday, 5th January, see you all then!! Everyone at the Pre-school wishes you all a very Happy New Year and thanks you for your support in 2009 and hope to see you all in 2010!
