enjoyed an entertaining The Garden Club began the New Year with a trip
to the Trelawney Garden Our next meeting is Wednesday 11 February; back to our usual time of 7.30pm in the St Mabyn Village Hall. We have a very interesting evening to look forward to with Max Simpson talking and showing us some very unusual gardening tools from way back when tools were tools! I am sure it will be great fun when we try to guess the usage of these tools. I hope to see you there. Do come and join us one evening. Tea and biscuits are available after the speaker. We had to have a draw for 1st and 2nd as two people got scores of 94½. 1st was Mrs Mary Cripps of Camborne,(£10) and 2nd, Mrs Bev Smith of St Tudy (£5). Congratulations! If you want a copy of the answers please let me know. Sue Dibble
Dear Friends At the end of February we begin the season of Lent when we traditionally give something up or start something new - a bit like a New Year resolution. This year I resolved to get fit so I joined a fitness club and seem to be doing quite well. It is not easy to embrace change - certainly I wasn’t keen on getting fit - but there comes a time when we simply have to do something. For me it was because everything seems to hurt at even the slightest movement. The church has come to this stage too if we are to reverse the trend of falling numbers and closing churches. There is great debate in the Methodist church about the value of small chapels with some folk calling for them all to close - one report suggested that 60% of Methodist churches should close. I disagree with that for village churches serve a real need in the community and the members are spiritually much stronger. The fact remains though that these churches are financially burdened and lack the people to do things; so we have to look at how we do things and seek a vision for the future. The Bible tells the story of Abraham to whom God makes a promise that he will become the father of a great nation yet he and his wife are both very old and have no children until, miraculously, Sarah becomes pregnant and bears a son. But, according to their tradition, Abraham must offer his son as a sacrifice to God. Faithfully he prepares to do so until God stops him and provides an alternative sacrifice. The lesson for us from this is that sometimes we have to do really difficult things if we are to move forward and this requires great faith. But God honours our faith and rewards it with riches beyond our imaginings. So, in life and in the church, we need to take our courage in both hands and step out in faith as we seek a brighter future. May God bless all your steps, especially those taken for Him. Stella

St Tudy Garden Produce AssociationAt our AGM on 8th December we agreed that the three shows continue for the time being, and hopefully the new allotments will produce a crop of new entrants! In order to encourage them a new cup will be awarded for the best allotment exhibit and dedicated to the memory of Bernice Hancock who had supported the hanging baskets competition so well over the years. The cup will be paid for by a generous donation from “Binding Stone” funds. Club subscriptions will remain at £4, and for the next October meeting it is hoped to have a members’ question and answer session as well as photos of the allotments development. Prior to the AGM everyone enjoyed some delicious snacks and a drink or two, then once the business was concluded Sue Dibble had two of her quizzes to tax us. These caused some amusement, if more than a little thought, especially the question about the name of the plant if she was hit in the face! On 12th January, Mark Norris came to talk about Newquay Zoo. With the aid of slides, he showed us some of the history of the zoo since it was set up in 1969. At that time, the site was surrounded by open fields; now it is completely enclosed by housing, which unfortunately means there is no room for any large expansion. But by moving things around and changing the use of existing space they are managing to set up new sites, especially one for African animals, shortly to be opened. The zoo has many rare and endangered species and has been successful in breeding from these; they work closely with their sister zoo at Paignton. Of interest to gardeners will be a new garden, set up on the lines of the wartime model, for growing food for the animals on site, thus cutting costs and carbon footprints. Mr Norris brought along some of the smaller members of the zoo such as snails the size of which no gardener would ever want on his plot; a huge millipede, a stick insect and an enormous cockroach; not everyone was enamoured of these! But it was an enjoyable and interesting evening and, hopefully, will persuade us to visit the zoo this year. On Monday 9th February we have Philip Martin coming to talk to us about Norfolk Lavender and on Wednesday 18th February our quiz team will (hopefully!) be successful in defending their title in the inter-village quiz at St Kew, starting at 7.30pm. Please do support us! Jane King

CAROL SINGING AROUND ST TUDY VILLAGEOur sincere thanks to all for making our annual home visits a great success. £340 was raised for Mount Edgcumbe Hospice. It was particularly enjoyable to have several young people join us this year; more would be most welcome in 2009. Thank you also for the warm greeting received from villagers. Allen Valley SingersOur annual concert at St. Tudy Methodist Church on the 18th December was very well attended and the enthusiastic audience joined with the choir in well-loved carols. The choir sang a variety of songs, under the directorship of Janette Man, which gave pleasure to choir and audience alike. For only its second airing, we sang ‘Mr. Blue Sky’, a remarkably difficult song from the 1970s, written by Jeff Lynne for performance by the Electric Light Orchestra but with the gusto of the choir and the enthusiasm of the audience, we thoroughly enjoyed our rendering!! Zoe Ray sang two solos so beautifully that one could have heard the proverbial pin drop in the church, so intent were the listeners. A piano solo was played by Steve Tyrrell in his incomparable way and we are grateful for the constant delight these two soloists give to us and our audiences. The evening concluded with welcome refreshments given by the members of the church. We had a very happy evening. Now we have the programme for 2009 to work towards, including concerts, a new recording and more music to share. If you enjoy singing and would like to join the Allen Valley Singers, whether as a Soprano, Middle or Alto, you are invited to apply to our Musical Director Janette Man, Telephone 01208 841784 We meet at the Community Hall in St. Kew Highway on each Tuesday of the month from 7.15 pm to 9 pm. To book the choir, please contact Jennifer May, tel. 880131. Other enquiries to our Secretary Jenni Tarring, tel. 841329.
St Mabyn Scout GroupWay back in 2007 saw the centenary of Scouting with lots of events and the World Scout Jamboree where 40,000 scouts came together from nearly every country from around the world & camped together. Both Rikki & Tony Menhenitt were both fortunate to get to represent the county, one as a contingent leader the other as a Scout participant. So how could 2008 ever match a year like 2007? Well it did. The group has seen the erection of our long awaited toilet block, although far from finished & currently just a shell, hopefully the end is nearly in sight! The Group has been fortunate to get a new team of Beaver leaders & they have been very busy doing exciting activities with the Beavers including pasty making, hiking and entering the Wadebridge craft fair. The Cubs have also been busy with swimming, ice skating and along with the Scouts went on camp to Torquay where they took part in several fear defying activities such as quad biking, climbing, aeroball & jumping out of two storey building to go down a huge zip wire! The Scout section have been canoeing, fencing, under-taken several night hikes & managed to acheive the rock climbing badge the pinicle being several large climbs on the cliffs at Porthleven. The group finished the year with a long awaited Gang Show, a production where all members of the group from Beavers to Leaders take part, earning the members their entertainers badge. The show was a huge sucess with guest appearances from the Teletubbies & Star Trek characters! And finally the group did some bag packing at Sainsburys to raise some much needed funds. So what will 2009 bring? Well the programme’s looking hectic already with lots of fun things planned but we won’t spoil the surprise. We’d like to thank every-one for all their help & support throughout the year. Akela & Rikki

FROM REVEREND MARGARET We are now on the threshold of Lent, our great penitential season. Lent group information will be in my next newsletter. The new hymn books have generally been well received. Please feel free to sponsor them. A sticker will be pasted in the front of the hymn book. Some suggestions are in memory of, or a wedding, a baptism or a birth. The choice is yours and labels will be produced accordingly. Requests and information may be given to Margaret or the Churchwardens. The Commissioning took place on 3rd January at St Mabyn by Bishop Roy of our Worship leaders. They are Liz Hayman, Rosemary Yeomans, Kate Martin and David Ford. They will help particularly in the planning of special services so please feel free to make suggestions to them. I do have a few ideas for social events for 2009, but would welcome more. I realise that we do need to fund raise to keep the churches open, but this year I should like more emphasis placed on the Spiritual, because if this is right then the “material” will happen. There are many very varied musical events planned for 2009 and they will be well published and I hope well supported. Please let me know of anyone who is sick or in need of a visit, or who might like Communion at home. Finally a reminder that Bishop Tim (our new Bishop) is being welcomed and installed at Truro Cathedral on 7th March. Please remember him and his wife Sian in your prayers. Every blessing. ST TUDY Thursday Afternoon ClubWe were thwarted yet again! We had to abandon our farewell party in December because the Luncheon Club had the same date for their Christmas do. We have booked the hall for Thursday 12th February. Please look in your photo albums for a picture of yourself when you were small – we’ll put them on a table and give everyone a piece of paper to write down if they can work out who’s who. A prize for the most correct answers, so don’t show the photos to your friends first! We will arrange some more games, probably a beetle drive. Please also bring with you a small gift (suitably wrapped) to the value of £2 for the bran tub and a plate of party food. We’re aiming to use up what’s left in the funds for the liquid refreshments . . . so please do turn up at 2.30. Jane and Ivy
ST TUDY W ISt Tudy W I’s Christmas meeting almost didn’t happen! Our President arrived early to find the Village Hall’s heating system had broken down. A quick phone around and various heaters appeared which warmed up the place beautifully for our jollifications! Needless to say, business and notices were speedily dealt with on this occasion and we settled down to have some fun. Sue Dibble organised two quizzes with prizes. Mrs Lobb read the winning Blaikeley Salver poem, followed by further seasonal poetry read by some of our members. After a sumptuous spread – what wonderful cooks we have in St Tudy – there were Lucky Dip presents, wine for tasting and tea. Carol singing ended the evening. Then there was the washing-up but nobody minded. At the January meeting, the speaker was Peter Davies on the North Cornwall Coast. The slides shown and his commentary were excellent and made us appreciate what a beautiful and interesting part of the country we live in. The business at this meeting included arrangements for our forthcoming New Year dinner and bowling at Trethorne in February. Some members had visited Cotehele before Christmas to see the magnificent garland and enjoy the singing. Even in the winter there are interesting things to see and do in the WI!

CONCERTS IN ST TUDY CHURCH – ADVANCE NOTICEST MEWAN SINFONIA. On Saturday 9th May, this splendid small string orchestra will be playing in the Church at 7.30pm to (we hope) a full house. The Sinfonia has over the last thirty years acquired for itself a fine reputation for the quality and performance of its music, and in the last twelve months, has given concerts in Launceston and Truro Cathedral. This will be the first occasion that we have been privileged to have an orchestra performing in the Church and I hope it will be well supported. STEPHEN TYRRELL. Many of you will remember with pleasure the concert of piano music given by Stephen Tyrrell in September last year. It was, as expected, a scintillating performance and he has been persuaded by popular request to come again on 27th June to give another concert. This event cannot be too highly recommended, and it is hoped that by supporting this concert, we will show our appreciation of a considerable local talent. It is hoped to arrange a Concert of vocal music given wholly by local talent in the Church some time in early September. Details will appear in a subsequent edition of the Magazine, but in the meantime please note in your diaries the two dates already fixed. GEOFFREY GIBBONS
MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTIONReminder – your Magazine subscription is due on 1st February. Please pay your distributor £4.00 as soon as possible. Thank you. EDITOR

FRIENDS OF ST MABYN CHURCHWe are delighted to announce that our first Meal/Talk of 2009 will take place in St Mabyn Village Hall on Friday 27th February at 12.30 for 12.45pm. The speaker will be the very well known and popular Carole Vivian (Bard), past President of Cornwall Association of Local Historians. Carole’s talk (with slides) is based on the history of St Mabyn and district, including St Tudy, St Kew and St Endellion. As these functions have proved to be very popular we recommend early booking, as numbers are limited. The talk will follow a three-course meal with wine (vegetarian option available.) The cost is £12 per person with concessions for members. On this occasion we shall be holding a raffle, which will include handcrafted jewellery very generously donated by Countess La Grelle of Colquite. For reservations please contact Audrey Cooke 01208 841607 (email: audreycooke@live.com) 14th December was party time when Liz (our Chairman) and Gage Williams invited ‘Friends’ to Menkee for a drinks party. The event was very well supported and proved to be a perfect opportunity for Members to get together. Everyone had a wonderful time and hope very much that there will be a repeat next December! ‘Friends’ would also like to express their appreciation to Alan and Reverend Margaret Millson for hosting such an enjoyable Epiphany party on 3rd January at the Rectory in St Tudy. This was another opportunity to eat, drink and be merry in a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We are particularly grateful to Alan and Reverend Margaret for arranging this event after an extremely busy Christmas period in the parish. Unfortunately, our Treasurer Carole Grigg suffered an accident when she slipped on ice during the recent cold spell and had to undergo knee surgery at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Needless to say we wish her a very speedy recovery and hope very much that she will be up and about in the near future. During Carole’s period of recuperation it would be appreciated if enquiries re membership of ‘Friends’ could be directed to either Liz 01208 841378 or Audrey 01208 841607. Membership remains at £10pa although those who choose to make a larger contribution are, of course, welcome to do so. Audrey Cooke
