Dear Friends

On the whole I find Methodism, for all its faults, has much to offer; and the movement of its ministers is one of its gifts as it allows our gifts to be shared around. It also prevents both ministers and churches from stagnating and certainly my move this time has spurred the circuit into making some really important changes to the way it works, not least in employing a new Families Worker. I think this is a really good move and I trust all will work together so that this really benefits the circuit. On the other hand, moving is painful as Richard and I are just beginning to learn some of the benefits of living in this area, not least the many friends we have made. We have been truly blessed by the love, help, support, encouragement, trust and so much more, we have received from you. Thank you all so much for all of that.

I also ask your forgiveness for the mistakes I have made and the times I have failed any of you. I pray that if I have hurt or upset any of you, you may find it in your hearts to forgive me and that God will grant you healing. It is difficult to know what challenges Romsey and the New Forest will offer; certainly there will be that of superintendency and learning what it means to lead a circuit. Then I must learn how to minister in a church much larger than any I have had before, together with six others of varying sizes in the heart of the Forest. There is much going on in the circuit with a very gifted part time children’s worker, a part time pastoral visitor, an administrator; and a circuit leadership team who meet regularly to give support and plan for the future.

All this is very exciting though also terrifying so it is with very mixed feelings that I say goodbye and God bless you. Please keep in touch and, of course, we look forward to welcoming any who wish to visit us in that beautiful part of the world.                                                                                           STELLA

THANK YOU!

A very big thank you to everyone in St Tudy and the Port Isaac practice area, who so kindly supported me in my recent adventure, trekking across Scotland for the TGO challenge 2009. This event, which is supported by The Great Outdoors magazine has been held annually for the past 30 years and involves a trek across the beautiful highlands of Scotland from the west to the east coast, ending with a big party at Montrose. Challengers devise their own route from a collection of starting points; my husband and I walked from Lochailort, meeting up with other intrepid travellers at various places along the way. The weather was very kind to us, with four sunny days to start with, sun to end with and a bit of wind, rain, and fog in the middle just to test our map-reading skills!

The average age of challengers was 57, with a range from 21 to 80! We covered a distance of 180 miles over 13 days and met many amazing and inspiring people, some of whom had done the trek over 20 times. I decided to try and raise some money for MSF, Medecins Sans Frontieres, which provides emergency medical care to people in disaster areas or war zones and are often the only medical teams available. They do fantastic work. Thanks to your generosity I raised £800 for this very worthy cause- thank you again! Dr Eileen Partington

PARTY IN THE VILLAGE

A notice with this heading, written by Chris Selby, appeared in the last
issue of this Magazine and suggested a date of Saturday 7th August 2010, this
being well in advance of the proposed event so others yet to be planned will
avoid any clash.

It is reiterated that this party should be a fun and enjoyable event for all
the village and hopefully memorable, a party in the village centre with music
and other entertainment.

What is needed now is an input of ideas and offers of help from the St Tudy
organizations and from individuals. Any views and suggestions from you should
be address to Cllr Brian Lamerton or to any other members of the Parish
Council. The Council will be grateful for your assistance in this matter.

FRIENDS OF ST MABYN CHURCH

For the third consecutive year Jazz on the Green on 11th July was forced to take place in St Mabyn Church due to absolutely dreadful weather. Nevertheless, everyone entered into the spirit of the occasion and picnics were enjoyed in the Church whilst the Bodmin College Jazz Orchestra worked their magic once again under their new Musical Director, Ben Vincent.

St Mabyn Church has been the venue for some wonderful concerts and events in the recent past and the BCJO have become firm favourites. On this occasion their superb rendition of “The Stripper” was a highlight of the evening although it must be said that we were spared the kind of exotic performance that is often associated with this piece!  However, at one point in the evening (almost) everyone was on their feet dancing and this was followed by a sing-along to “New York New York.” We are delighted to have been able to support the band once again, particularly as they are working so desperately hard to raise £35,000 to enable them to become the first Cornish band to play on the bandstand in Central Park, New York, during June 2010. On 10th July they competed at the National Music Festival for Youth at Birmingham Symphony Hall and, not only did they travel from Cornwall to and from the venue on the same day, but they were among the 320 finalists from 1800 entrants. Thirty of the finalists will be selected to play at the Proms at the Albert Hall – so fingers crossed.

The orchestra’s website, www.bodjazz.co.uk lists the orchestra’s forthcoming gigs and gives numerous audio samples of their music.  So, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy a ‘Bodjazz’ concert and support these incredibly talented young people and help them on their way to New York.  We must also add that, not only are these youngsters exceptionally talented, but they are also extremely charming and well mannered!

We have now been able to appoint a quiz master for our Wine and Wisdom evening on Wednesday 7th October at 7.30.  Entry price has yet to be fixed but will include wine and cheese refreshments. For FOSMC membership enquiries please call 01208 841276.                                                 Audrey Cooke

FROM REVEREND MARGARET

Since Easter the months seem to have rushed by and we are now in the middle of summer. Alan and I are busy preparing for our holiday beginning on 15th July. The holiday will provide a bridge between the end of my “sick leave” and returning to my full duties on 1st August.

I am very grateful to all the clergy who have helped me out during Sunday services and especially to Peter Coster and John Brendon-Cook. I do hope everyone will join us in the Songs of Praise at 3pm not 5pm in the Rectory Garden on 1st August and then stay for cake and wine. If you have a favourite hymn that you would like included please write it down and give it to Geoffrey.

St Tudy Allotment Association

After our very successful official opening in April we have decided to have a summer lunchtime gathering.  Everyone is invited to visit the allotments on Saturday 29 August at 12 noon to have a glass of wine and some food.  There will be a book stall and produce stall, plus a raffle.  There will be a small charge for entry.  We are hoping for good weather but if it is pouring down with rain then the event will be postponed.  Please bring a chair to sit on.

There is no parking at the allotments so park in the village and walk down.  We look forward to seeing everybody there and to show you what we have been growing. Sarah

ST TUDY CARNIVAL REPORT 2009

The carnival was cancelled on the Saturday as the weather became a concern and the committee made the decision to call it off for that day and try again on Sunday. It was a difficult decision to make but it was generally felt that it was not fair to expect people especially the younger children to hang around in the rain whilst waiting to be judged. We didn’t think many of the villagers would want to come out to see it during a downpour either! The Hog Roast and Dance, organised for the evening in the village hall went ahead and was well supported.

The carnival went ahead on Sunday and the organisers were delighted with the turn out; the villagers put off other plans to support the event and many visiting Royalty came despite the disappointment of the day before. We were unfortunately without a band as, neither St Breward Silver Band or Truro Samba Band, could make it on the Sunday but thanks to Ian Hodges and the floats we had some music on the procession.

Although the message may not have reached everyone there was a good number of spectators and they were well rewarded, as there was a high standard of entries. There were nine floats with various themes, including the beach, Bob the Builder, MP’s Tea Party, the Gravy Train and others; amongst the walking entries we had the oldest entrant, 92 years of age, dressed as a Celtic Lady and the youngest entrant, 16months, came as Loopy Loo. Other visitors included:  Madame Butterfly, Robin Hood & Maid Marion and Tweety & Sylvester.

The committee would like to thank all that attended and to the entrants and families; Ian Hodges for helping to put up the bunting, manning the gate and providing some band music on route; Bill Hodge for selling raffle tickets, Zoe Hodges for making the announcements and reading out the prize winners; Brian Keat for helping out on the road; Sophie Hodge for helping in the registration tent; Geoffrey & Hazel Gibbons for standing in for Lesley Fraser to pick the winner of the Howard Fraser Memorial Shield; Colin & Judith Jasper for the difficult job of judging the visiting royalty; Brian Farmer & Graham Keat for tin collecting and Dr Partington for being our first-aid cover.

Particular thanks to Brian Lamerton for helping with the bunting, putting up the marquees, selling raffle tickets and helping to clear away. Also to Nigel, Roger and Paul for the use of their fields for parking and turning.

ST TUDY W I

Lilian Lamerton, Vice-President, welcomed members to our July meeting. She is organising two outings – a boat trip around Devonport Dockyard on Wednesday 19th August, leaving the village at 12 noon for a 2pm boat and time for a meal at the Barbican – cost £12.50; a visit to the Hall for Cornwall on Thursday 3rd September to see “Lord of the Dance” – cost £29.50. Anyone can go to these – including men! So please book with Lilian or Karen (Smith) as soon as possible.

We were delighted to welcome Michael Munds as our guest speaker. Some of us could remember him growing up in the village and found it interesting hearing how he started his fitness career and of his successful gymnasium he now runs in Bodmin. He then had us on our feet doing a gentle pilates-type of exercise – very relaxing! We came away with his programme of classes, so there’s no excuse! Jane Miller was first with her fitness tip and Jennie Harris second; Sue Dibble was flower of the month and Beryl Starr second.

Everyone is welcome to join us at Tree Corner, Tremeer Lane, the home of Maggie Lobb on Friday afternoon 28th August. A cream tea will be served; bring & buy, raffle, various games and the Saffron Maids will perform their dancing. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all who came last year, so hope to see you there!

DO YOU HAVE A PIANO TO GIVE AWAY?

Recent events in St Tudy Church have shown how useful a piano would be to assist not only in services where the organ (or organist!!) is not available, but also for other musical occasions such as the recent recital of piano music performed by Steve Tyrrell. The need to bring in a keyboard would be avoided. It hardly needs to be mentioned that any instrument offered should be in good repair and capable of being tuned up to concert pitch when required.

ST TUDY PRE SCHOOL

8th August, Coffee morning and raffle at the Clink in aid of St Tudy Pre-school, 10 - 12.

22nd August, Village Fun Day and BBQ, 12 - 3 at the Village Hall. Everybody welcome.

Although it's August and school is out, St Tudy Preschool is still busy. We offer a cuppa to parents and lots of things to play with for the little ones, indoors and out.

The Trustees are pulling together the final stages of the Pre-school's business plan, in readiness to make a bid for a purpose-built pre-school in the village.  We hope that everybody has had a chance to see our plans or speak to us about our proposals.  If you feel you are able to help in any way, from writing a letter of support to assisting us with the planning of a new build please contact Liz Hustwayte on 850278...  There is also another chance to look at our plans on 22nd August at the Village Fun Day in the Village Hall, 12 - 3.  Come along and take a look, and have a burger too.

Finally, we'd like to say huge thank you to all the Pre-school staff and parents who have worked so hard this year.  They have pulled us through a very difficult year and we are very grateful.  Hopefully they will still be with us to see a new building for the pre-schoolers.  Goodbye to all our leavers, all headed for St Tudy Primary School, we wish them all the very best for the future.

We have a coffee morning on 8th August at The Clink. Hope to see you there!

“A LONG WALK BACK”

In response to a number of requests by St Tudy residents, two copies are now available for short term loan from the writer of the recently privately published diaries recording the escape in 1943 of four army Captains from a prisoner of war camp in Italy who thereafter made their way south to Allied lines.

The work, “A Long Walk Back” runs to 44 pages and with its two appendices can be borrowed from me and is returnable in 7 days. The loan is conditional upon the borrower agreeing not to copy any part of the work or the appendices. Colonel G T G Williams suggests that a donation to the charity Help for Heroes would be appropriate.                                                                    GEOFFREY GIBBONS (851267)

THANKS

I am deeply grateful for the small avalanche of cards, which came through the letter box on my birthday.

My Birth Day should have been a week of two later. I have always been told that my mother, purchasing baby clothes, left Swan & Edgar (the Piccadilly Store) just as a Zeppelin dropped a small bomb onto Piccadilly. This brought matters forward. My father, home that night from the war in France, was sent helter-skelter with the perambulator to the Chelsea coal dump to ensure the small fire in their flat in Cheyne Court could be kept alight and the kitchen stove too. There being no telephone, the midwife, who lived in North London was telegraphed for, together with my mother’s sister. The former delivered me into this stormy world at 0800 the following morning of 18th July 1915.      LOUIS LE BAILLY

Cornwall Historic Churches Trust

This year the annual sponsored event will be held on Saturday 12th September. Originally it was a sponsored cycle ride between churches but has now expanded to include walks, horse riding and mini-bus trips or sponsored cleaning or flower arranging in churches. In St Tudy we have held a successful coffee morning for the last few years and will do so again on the 12th.

If anyone would like to be sponsored to do something energetic I have sponsor forms or they can be obtained from your churchwardens. The Trust gives grants for repairing churches and chapels in Cornwall but needs help in return. 50% of any money raised is kept by the church so it helps to organise a local event.

ST TUDY PARISH COUNCIL

The Council met in the St Tudy Village Hall at 7pm on the last Wednesday in
July. Apologies were received from Mrs M Ham, Mr B Greaney, Mr Chris Selby
and Mr Jeremy Rowe who now represents St Tudy in the St Issey division of the
new Unitary Council for Cornwall. The Unitary Council will be known in future
as the Cornwall Council. There were no reports from the Police.

A planning application for alterations to Bodrigan Farmhouse, which lies on
the edge of the parish boundary, received the support of the Council.

Another notice is to be placed in this issue of the magazine regarding the
proposed community event that is scheduled for August 2010. The event will be
discussed further at the next Council meeting, and, if necessary, a village
meeting will be convened.

An old car, which had to be removed, is reported to have reappeared in another
part of the village. St Tudy is not meant to be a dump for old cars and the
Parish Council is taking appropriate action.

The next meetings of the Council are scheduled for Wednesday 29 July and
Wednesday 30 September, both at 7pm in the St Tudy Village Hall. Members
of the public are always welcomed in attending Council meetings.

st Mabyn Parish Council Meeting, 2nd June 2009

Cllr C Brewer informed the Council of this being his last meeting representing St Mabyn parish on Cornwall Council, as he would be standing for the Wadebridge ward in the elections in June 2009.

Following the resignation of Cllr Mrs C Cordell, the Council is grateful to Mrs Cordell for her service to the Council – a vacancy notice is on the Parish Notice Boards.

It was agreed that a letter be sent to the Camel Community Support Agriculture (CCSA) supporting their project at St Kew.

Planning Permission   Mr N Embley, Mabena House, Watergate Lane, St Mabyn – Erection of extension and replacement of roof – Refused.

Playing Field:  Inspections continue to be carried out on a monthly basis. The Council awaits the play equipment company to get in touch regarding the siting and installation of the new grant funded swing and roundabout.  The wall on the old changing rooms had been re-plastered. The Chairman had contacted the contractor in relation to the grass cutting work. The disposal of grass cutting continued to be a problem. Cllrs agreed to the grass being disposed of at Tinten Manor by the contractor.

Footpaths/plus Longstone:  In addition to trimming the footpath behind St Mabyn Chapel the contractor will be asked to trim the grass areas adjacent to the Longstone notice board and the parish seats.  The Cornwall Council will be asked to trim the verges at Longstone and the visibility areas for the junctions off the B3266. The Cornwall Council have not responded to the Parish Councils recent request to look at the poor condition of the footpath at Menkee. The Parish Council had not trimmed this path as they felt it was now unsafe for walkers.  A new sign had been erected at Footpath No. 5 at Longstone.

Allotments:  After hearing the contents of a letter received from Stratton & Holborrow dated the 20th May 2009, the Council resolved not to consider the inclusion of a car park on the area of Glebe land adjacent to the Memorial Hall.  An alternative area for allotments on the site, different from that originally proposed, would be considered. The current tenant of the land had been notified of the Councils proposals. Another site at Glenmorris will also be considered.

Public Toilets – public access:  The Council await the decision from the Memorial Hall Committee regarding the fencing of the boundary wall before making a decision on whether or not to provide an alternative access to the public toilets.                                                                     CLLR HELEN Barrett
